The Forge Masters Origins Nickname: Powersmiths Parentage: Adamantine Arrow, Mysterium, Free Council. Background: Blacksmith, engineers, machinists, hobbyists Appearance: Typically better developed upper bodies. When working, leather protective gloves, aprons. Traditionalists may wear a singular eye patch, or more modern mages may opt for goggles.
Doctrine Prerequisites: Matter 2, Crafts 2, Science OR Occult 2 Initiation: The tutor constructs a furnace of stone and clay using no magic and no tool he did not make himself, and includes a cup of his own blood in a hollow in the floor. The apprentice climbs inside with a nail of siderite. The tutor fires the furnace with Mana and seals the apprentice. The spell fire causes pain but no damage, and the apprentice uses the nail to run his own blood to mingle with his tutor's, meditating until he's absorbed the mana. Then the tutor breaks the furnace and, while his apprentice glows with magic, uses a phantasmal hammer of mana imbued with the pupil's own soul pattern, to forge his apprentice's soul. The apprentice leaps into a bath of cold water and lets the absorbed mana rush from him, tempering and locking his new soul's pattern. The tutor then destroys the furnace so it cannot be used for anything less sacred. Organization: The Forge Masters take place typically in a master-apprentice relationship and have little concern for organization beyond that. Occasionally, if a sufficient number of smiths are gathered together, they may form a guild, though even they don't take such groups all that seriously outside of a cooperative contact net. Theory: Forge Masters keep themselves largely apart from politics, keeping a working-class attitude and sympathies, where the craftsman makes the tools with pride and diligence.
Magic Ruling Arcana: Matter Yantras: Succeed on a Crafts or Weaponry roll relevant to the spell (+2); Tools of craft, like hammers, pliers, anvils, furnaces (+1, +2 for a functional forge); Self-made handiwork (+1, +2 if tailored to the spell); Perfected metals (+2) Oblations: Smelt own metal, use own smelted metal to craft a tool or weapon, forge a small item and quench with blood, turn scrap metal into something useful and beautiful, repairing tool or armour good as new after it was damaged in battle.
Attainments Initiation: The Master's Gaze Prerequisites: Initiation Reach: Instant casting
A Forge master can at will mimic the effects of the Supernal vision spell, allowing him to identify Imbued or Enhanced items and Artifacts with ease as well as their Supernal purpose. The Master’s gaze activates automatically when touching one of these types of items. Optional: Prime 1 The Powersmith also knows the intended non-Supernal function of any object he holds when the Master’s gaze is active.
Second: Metal Grimoire Prerequisites: Matter 2, Crafts 3 Reach: Instant casting, Lasting
The Forge masters are known for working wonders with metals and this second Attainment is evidence of that. It is far easier to hide a Grimoire as a ring or bracelet than a book. The size of the Grimoire together with the Forge Master’s mastery of Matter determines the dots worth of Rotes that can be stored: Size + Matter dots = Nr. dots worth of Rotes in the Metal Grimoire. Optional: Prime 2 By spending 1 Mana during the activation of the Attainment the Metal Grimoire can be made Lasting.
Third: The Master's Hand Prerequisites: Matter 3, Crafts 3, Science OR Occult OR Athletics at 3 or two at 2 Reach: Instant casting, 8-again quality
Use of the Master’s hand infuses a tool with supernal meaning, granting the 9-again quality to any spellcasting roll that incorporates it as a Yantra. Optional: Prime 3 The Mage can choose to include the tools original function as well, granting it the 9-again quality on rolls that involve its intended purpose as well. Optional 2 Either of the 9-again qualities can be upgraded to the 8-again quality instead.
Fourth: Primal tempering Prerequisites: Matter 4, Crafts 4, Science OR Occult OR Athletics at 3 or two at 2 Reach: Instant casting, Advanced Scale (Matter scale)
As an instant action the mage can imbue an item with power and make it solid to all Twilight entities. The attainment only applies to the item’s primary purpose. A ghost could type on a typewriter enhanced with Primal tempering but could not pick it up and use it as a bludgeoning weapon. Optional: Prime 4 Tempered tools can be made to give an exceptional success on 3 successes instead of 5.
Fifth: Primal Forge Prerequisites: Matter 5, Crafts 4, Science OR Occult OR Athletics at 4 or two at 3 or three at 2 Reach: Instant casting
At the pinnacle of reforging his soul the Forge Master’s soul has become a forge itself and can use it as such. The Forge Master can at any moment reproduce any item he has worked on. Optional: Prime 5 Any spells that the Powersmith uses that target the created item count as one spell against his spell control slots.
