GM: ------------------------------
"...and I guess that's it! Bye everyone!" Valerie's own voice calls from the editing screen.
Arielle leans across the back of her seat. On her, rich brown hair cascades down to bounce near her slim waist, exposed by a tanktop to reveal hard abs.
"You are such a flirt. You flirt with every audience member."
Valerie: "And I love each and everyone of them." She clicks and drags her end slate from her library to fade in at the end of the video and, satisfied that the audio didn't clip anywhere, hits the render button to get the process of getting it ready for upload.
Valerie: She rolls her head back to look up at her sister's tougher form from her plusher own. "They keep me afloat, after all."
GM: "It got you an apartment in San Fran on your own, that's a hell of an accomplishment."
GM: "This place is what, 2800 a month?"
GM: "24?"
Valerie: "Close. 2725, though I only pay 2250 after government assist."
GM: "Oh right, that's a big deal."
She brushes her hair back over her shoulder. They've spent their entire lives together, mirrors to one another - at least until the accident.
Valerie: Used to be a lot more alike before then. Could dress like one another, style their hair, and fool everyone but their parents.
GM: "I'm really glad you've been able to do this. It's so cool, Sis. So what's up for the rest of the day, we still on for coffee shop?"
Valerie: "It's fun... Absorbing, if anything." She rolls her wheels in opposite direction to turn herself around and face Arielle.
"Yeah, I can still do hot chocolate and donuts. And I'll upload the video tonight and watch the responses for a bit, then... I dunno, didn't plan that out."
GM: "You could make a special video for your boyfriend~. That cute let's player across town totally has it for you. What's his name again, NowayHome?"
Valerie: She flushes. "I'm not going to cam him. We're not dating." She crosses her arms, pouting a bit. "We just... get along well. ..but yeah, that's his nick."
GM: Her sister chirrups at her in the weird almost-language they spoke as toddlers, a sort of 'uh huh, sure~'
GM: "Just wait, he'll come over to do a collab sometime."
Valerie: She self-consciously adjusts her jeans on useless legs. "We'll see."
Valerie: "Just for that you're paying, though."
GM: "Aww man."
She pulls her sister's head in and kisses the top.
She probably doesn't know that Valerie only has a questionable amount of feeling where it counts. It's probably one of the more - personally debilitating parts of her condition. Oh she still feels the flutter of attraction, she can still make herself warm... but she never even got to try like her sister has.
Once she's ready to go, Arielle takes the handles, guiding her out of her little apartment. It's the only handicap accessible one on the block, a dizzying hill - if she accidentally rolled towards it, it would be all she could do to engage the brakes without getting thrown from the chair.
Valerie: There's this weird V-shape of no feeling around the area. The top works, mostly, but most of the outside edges do nothing, except at the very bottom where it's no help anyway. She has no idea what it's like inside, and the logistic of getting it on with legs like hers boggles the mind, so she doesn't know how it would even work or if she could even bring herself to try given the opportunity.
She almost took a fall one of the first times coming out of here. If there hadn't been a bed frame there she'd be flattened forever on the side of one of the shops down there. Though now she's used to it and knows how to navigate the obstacles, so long as there's no asshole who parks where they shouldn't.
GM: Which is always. She's got the tow company on her contacts list for a reason.
Outside, it's a beautiful day, a rare bright sunny sky over the bay. They aren't far from the great park, and when she's feeling real bold she'll go wheeling down its paths and check out the museums.
With her sister pushing her, they head down to the coffee shop on the intersection. It's a quaint place, with unvarnished tables and a cute little rooster on the sign - Up and At 'Em Cafe. Good sandwiches and wraps here, though she has been known to stuff herself on donuts when she's feeling depressed.
GM: A cute barrista, her hair down over one eye, gives her a beam. "Hey YouTube girl. Usual?"
Valerie: When she's feeling a bit more on the ball - like today - she permits herself two tops. She reaches down to poke her belly. ...she'll have to debate whether it's worth picking up that 'sit and be fit' series DVD. She'll probably be lose and not get it, but it makes her feel like she puts in the token effort if she does think about it.
Valerie: "Heya. And almost - replace the jelly donut with a honey dip. I'm feeling bold today."
GM: "Sure thing~"
Valerie hears Arielle's hands tighten on the back of the chair.
"I'll take a soy latte and a bacon wrap, thanks."
Valerie: She turns her head slightly to glance back at her hand. "... actually, cut my second pastry. I'll do with just a cruller."
GM: "Okay!"
Arielle rolls her into place at the table, coming to sit next to her on one corner of the table.
GM: "So - joking about dating aside, I'm seeing someone new."
Valerie: She reaches down to ease the brakes up over the wheels once she's placed into position, then starts to set up her keep-my-jeans-clean blanket. Though she pauses at those words, glancing up. "What, really?"
GM: "Yeah. I mean - I liked Jason, a lot, but, well, you know."
She sighs, pushing a water stain around the table.
"You know how sometimes you get mad? I don't blame you, at all, you've got a lot of reason to be mad. The illness kept getting worse and he just seemed to take it out on me."
Valerie: Val purses her lips together while mulling it over. "Yeah.. I can see how it could grow to be too much." She certainly feels bad enough when she loses it. She tries to steer away from putting it on her sister and channel it towards something else, but it can be hard.
"...well, let's go to the nicer side of things. Who is the catch?"
GM: She brightens, and it's nice seeing her own face light up like that
GM: "Well first it's a sheee~"
Valerie: "Whaaa, is she a dress-you-up type or one you'll have to dress up?"
GM: She giggles. "The former. I didn't even know I was into girls, but I was coming off the breakup and she and I were talking at the college and she was just so sweet."
"Sweet as me?" the barrista asks, coming to deposit a crueller and hot chocolate before Valerie, and the wrap and latte before Arielle.
"Aww, no one's sweet as you, Honey~"
GM: "So yeah we kissed and she was all like 'Let's trade numbers.'"
Valerie: She smiles up at the barrista with a nod. She then breaks up her pastry into smaller pieces to start nibbling. If she eats slow it's like it's got time to be burnt and not gain weight. At least, that's what her muscle memory tells her.
"Wow. That sounds pretty spontaneous. What's she like? Besides alluring lips."
GM: "Kinda sporty, but way girlier than I am. We go biking together."
Valerie: "Neither of us has ever been the epitome of girliness. Even now, in our own ways, so that's a low bar to cross." She sips at some of her hot chocolate.
GM: She laughs. "Yea."
Creamy and rich, just how she likes it.
"We were thinking of going up to the mountains together, actually, over the weekend."
Valerie: "The mountains? That sounds pretty romantic."
GM: Her twin hesitates, chewing on her wrap. She coils a hair around her finger.
"Will you be okay? While I'm gone."
Valerie: "I'm not helpless, I just can't walk." She waggles a piece of cruller at her. "If I can't make it past a weekend without you, I'm worse than useless. I'll survive the city bus if I have to head out."
GM: She takes a breath, smiling sadly. "Okay, cool."
She takes another bite.
"You know you can call me if you need to?"
There she goes again, being too solicitous
GM: Sometimes she gets like that, face full of concern.
Valerie: "I know. I have your number and your skype. And I will call if I need to talk. Promise." She crosses one arm on the table to lean on it. "It's not like I avoid you."
Valerie: "I want you to relax and get to know the beauty girl, not worry about me so much. I can handle things."
GM: Her sister smiles a little, laying a hand on hers.
"Okay. I'm gonna head home soon, want me to help you back or you got it? You're my big, strong, insignificantly older sister after all~"
Valerie: "I can make it, but thanks." She pats her hand with her other one. "I'll text you so you know I made it to my door."
GM: She moves to give her a hug and squeezes tight. Then she takes what's left of her latte and heads out, tossing her sandwich wrapper out as she goes.
Valerie: She goes about finishing her cruller and hot chocolate, musing over the news. Girls, huh? She has to wonder what she's like to have swept up Arielle like that.
She unlocks once she's done and starts to navigate for the doors.
GM: So if she's bi, does that make her bi, too? It's not guaranteed, but identical twins are far more likely to be. With the memory of her sister's perfect form making her phantom legs ache, she makes her way back home. Honey waves her out, the ever-cheerful barrista holding the door for her.
Clouds have begun to gather, but that's no matter to her. Chances are she isn't leaving for the rest of the day.
Her door opens itself, the machine there made by her and installed by her sister at her direction. It simplifies things greatly.
Valerie: Wouldn't be all that unheard of if she were. This is San Fran, so gay couples are common, so why wouldn't there be a girl to convince her she is? Boys are good too, though, lack of experience aside.
She rolls on into her apartment. She pauses to take out her phone and raises it up to take a quick selfie, then texts it to her sister. 'See? Survived the trip.'
GM: {God you're cute, sis~ Love you!}
A few down from her sister, there's a message from NowayHome she missed an hour or so ago.
{Hey! I'm doing a video on No Man's Sky, you want in on that?}
He sent her one of his avatar's pics, a cute multiracial anime guy in his hoodie.
Valerie: She has to consider that text for a bit. Did her sister talk to him on that collaboration, or is it coincidence? ...Welp, what's the harm? {Sounds like a hoot. Count me in.}
GM: {Great! I'll send you some stuff later. Can't wait to see your new video - you're going through the PS4 Project yeah?}
Valerie: {Yeah. I get the screen working. Doing something fancy with the joint to hide the wires. Should be up soon.}
Valerie: She smiles and rolls on over to her computer to check the rendering progress.
GM: Looks like it's just finished, actually!
Valerie: She does a watch of it to make sure it rendered correctly. Once satisfied, then she pops up the uploader and drags it in and writes up the description, plus footer, annotations, keywords, and off it goes to the great big web in the world.
GM: Her figurines, the ones she made herself, watch as the upload bar rises, and then it's out. Her channel, her own little kingdom of herself to herself - it's strange to think that this is her job now.
Valerie: They sit through the ads and banners imposed on them to watch it, then some of them sign up to send her some money every month for more of it, and then some company sees it, thinks it's neat, and ask them to talk about their product for cash. What a strange profession.
It really is the highlight of her life, these days.
GM: She gets so many messages on Patreon, Tumblr, and YouTube now that she can't possibly respond to them all. She had to change her main email address.
A message from NowayHome comes almost exactly after the length of the video. {Awesome! Great as always - it's amazing what you can do with your hands.}
Valerie: She tends to keep her fan interaction inside of the occasional AMAs, streams, and some noteworthy comments - ignoring the abusive ones (though some are funny.)
{That and a soldering iron, clamps, a 3d printer, some acetone and hot glue.}
{But thanks. I love doing this stuff, so I'm glad you like it.}
GM: A few minutes pass, then another message. {Hey, idea - why don't we stream you finishing the project? Live interaction. I could come over, help out.}
GM: Her sister's fingerprints might be on this.
Valerie: Her brows come up. This is definitely a conspiracy. Has to be. ...well, it's not like it's a bad idea... right? There's a bit of time before answering. {Think we can work something like that in. Though it'll be streaming filming the video of finishing the project. Not everyone watches streams! ...that makes sense, right? I feel like it made sense.}
GM: {Haha it's cool. I'm handy with tools, and I'll do some art, too. I'll make an annoucement today - say tomorrow?}
Saturday.
Valerie: ...there are worse ways her sister could have done to have someone to keep an eye on her, she supposes. {Schedule's open. I'll tweet it.}
GM: {Hype! Heading to class, catch you later~}
A breeze blows in, warm with summer promise. Her little apartment feels entirely too dirty all of a sudden.
Valerie: She draws her lower lip in her teeth, then sets her phone down. She rolls over to the computer and pops on twitter. 'Will stream behind-the-scenes for PS4 laptop vid with @nowayhome tomorrow starting at 1 PST. Finish or bust.'
With that posted, well, she can't back out of it. So she may as well get the place looking a little more presentable ahead of time while playing some music.
GM: There's so much to dust when you actually pay attention!
GM: By the time she finishes, it's time to set herself up a dinner, the sun set
Valerie: Thank heavens they invented the Swiffer. Even she can clean hard to reach places in a cinch.
Satisfied with the work, she sees about pulling some leftovers. There's some pasta she can reheat, with a bit of hot sauce mixed in.
GM: Her little kitchen comes with all sorts of useful little grabbers, too, also of her own making, it's a find reminder that ingenuity can -
The pasta slips as she takes it out of the microwave on the counter. It shatters on the floor, spraying the floor and her wheels.
Valerie: "Augh! Fuck!" She rolls back a few inches to get her wheels out of the mess, though they're covered. She looks down at the mess, then has to spend a moment to put her fist to her forehead and close her eyes. Fuck, ing, shit... Deep breathes, just... clean this bullshit, clean the chair, pants in the wash.
Particularly frustrating when it's not something that has to do with her legs, so she can't even blame that. She moves to the sink to grab a towel to get the wheels cleaned up first. Cleaning the floor will be a bitch, too... How fast one's mood can sour.
GM: Sometimes she just wants to explode, to take out the entire god-damned thing.
Valerie: She leans forwards to wet the towel and start wiping at the stupid wheels from the god damn pasta sauce all over them. Part way through, she grabs her computer remote to turn off the music - music is for good moods. In lieu of being able to throw the already broken plate, she chucks the remote at the couch to try for a measure of catharsis.
GM: Outside, lightning crashes, and that makes her feel better
Valerie: "Yeah, you and me both," she mumbles out at the sound of thunder.
GM: They don't often get thunderstorms in San Francisco! She can remember when she was a kid, living in the mountains, they used to get them all the time. Her sister would get scared and curl up with her, but they never bothered her
Valerie: She rolls out to a window and turns the handle a few times. Listening to the storm for a bit seems like what she needs right now so she can listen to the sky give it to the ground for a while.
GM: The storm that's blown in lashes the city with rain, and lightning thunders so close that light and sound are as one, striking the great buildings downtown, illuminating Alcatraz island.
GM: It's a consummate union, of Nut and Geb, Uranus and Gaia.
Valerie: She sets her elbows on one arm rest and rests her chin in her hands. It really is lovely, watching a billion volts at thirty thousand amperes rip through the air in arching shapes wherever they can hit.
GM: Takeout arrives while she watches and she almost misses it. With a pizza on her lap, she watches the storm spend itself for nearly three hours. By the time it moves on, slowing as it heads deeper into the bay, she feels exhausted.
Valerie: She definitely feels a lot better, though, like the storm let it all out for her by proxy... She stifles a yawn and closes her window in case the rain comes back downwind, and finishes the cleanup of her kitchen now that she's calm, lest she forgets about it.
Then she heads to her room and does the careful arm-lift to get herself on her bed so she can peel off her clothes and three-point throw them into the laundry basket and put her oversized nightshirt on.
GM: The tiger plush her sister got her from the zoo is there, looking at her with her soulful black eyes
GM: It took a lot to move out. It was the hardest thing she did.
Valerie: Val needed to be independent, though. If she didn't, she'd have just wasted away to nothing. She grabs and works her legs under the covers, then pulls the tiger in to hug it.
GM: Like her mother did after the accident.
GM: Her father was never the same after that.
GM: Sometimes, she fears he might wither - but he still has Arielle
Valerie: ...She should call him tomorrow... chat a bit. Catch him up.
GM: Sleepy, she drifts off.
Sleep is the only place she can walk.
GM: What shall she dream of tonight?
Valerie: The mountains. Going up isn't really possible - too steep to make it to such peaks on her own, too risky if she's taken there and no brakes is going to save her if a pebble gives way wrong.
But here, she can just daintily place her feet down on any mountain peak she can imagine and have it be better looking than any real life mountain.
GM: The wind whips about her, thunder and fury
GM: A dress billows about her legs, her wonderful legs
Valerie: Strong, sturdy and certain. She can walk through the wind along a thin trail with no fear, bare foot, around the tall peak in a lazy spiral.
GM: She darts around, dancing and fierce, stepping in time with the thunder.
As she turns, she sees a glimpse of another shape, a wave of flowing hair..
Valerie: What's this? A character? She picks up the pace, curious. Even in dreams people don't tend to wander mountains in the middle of a thunderstorm unless they're the instigator, so hearing the story that's here would be interesting.
GM: She runs after her, and finds the woman goes beyond the peak, walking on the very air.
Valerie: That just makes Val more curious. She has to put some thought behind it before she starts to set a foot over the air herself to begin following.
GM: A sudden coil of storm intrudes before her, a shape like a great serpent.
When she breaches the clouds, she sees her - wreathed in shining light, a dragon of storm and lightning cascading a figure eight behind her.
Valerie: She slows down at the sight of that, taking it in with wide eyes. Letting her dream do its thing has its advantages - coming up with things on purpose can make it seem pedestrian. A tired mind, though, makes some amazing displays of fantasy... like this great beast and its lady companion floating above the clouds. This she'll have to remember.
She starts to walk forwards again.
GM: The sight of it grows in her imagination, until nothing else seems real, and she hears a voice whisper subtly
"Seek."
GM: And then her alarm howls at her
Valerie: Her eyes snap open and she flails around for a bit until she finds the thing underhand. She clicks it off and plops the other arm across her eyes. ...that was wild.
GM: Even now, she can taste rain on her lips.
Valerie: Val sits up, running a finger along her lips. Seek... Wonder what she was to seek. She might have to search for this part of the dream again later. She'd go back to sleep right then if she didn't agree to do a thing today.
She pulls her wheelchair closer to start the tedious process of sitting in it so she can go start breakfast. Just toast - hard to spill that.
GM: She didn't leave her window open, did she? No.
Maybe it's just imagination.
The toast is good at least, keeping her going. Now, to plan for NowayHome's - well, Ethan's - arrival. They'll probably be getting set up for a while - people don't realize how much work goes into a good stream.
Valerie: Go back to her room, ditch her nightie, go to the washroom, raise the plastic platform up, draw a bath, sit on platform, lower it into the water, clean up, drain bath, raise platform, towel off, sit in chair, put clothes on, make sure her equipment is out... then it's just a matter of waiting.
GM: He got her address last night, he should know where to go.
Valerie: She rolls over to the window to peek out and see what's out there. This should be interesting...
GM: As she watches, a little scooter pulls up on the cracked pavement, a slim, handsome boy with dark olive skin and a backpack. He looks up, sees her looking through the window, and smiles - making her flutter, just a little.

2 beats and 1 gnostic~
Valerie: 'He's not supposed to be cute! Oh no!'
Valerie: :P

GM: ------------------------
Ethan looks at the door as it opens itself at her command, whistling. "That's pretty cool, Val!"
Slim, not too tall, he's wearing a Forgotten T-Shirt today. Airing over ten years ago and canceled after only one-and-a-half seasons, it still has a lot of power on people's imaginations. His shirt features Lethe, the latern-bearing nymph, with her long dark hair across one eye as she shyly holds her lantern up.
Some people find it depressing - a show about kids stolen from home, transformed, and then when they try to get back everyone's forgotten about them.
GM: Especially since it ended long before they resolved the plotline
Valerie: Val liked it too, though she hopped on the bandwagon late and it was already cancelled, so she knew what to expect. Still a shame. "There were models online I could have gone for, but they have the gall to ask for hundreds of dollars for anything decent. I put this one together with recycled bits and a $30 control board."
She rolls back to let him in, giving him a smile. "Thanks. It makes my life easier."
GM: He returns it, stepping in and looking around. "This is the first time we've seen each other since VidCon! How are you holding up?"
Valerie: "Better than right after VidCon. That was waaaay too many people for me to cope with. I'm alright, though."
A small hallway from the door. On the right is her washroom and dead ahead her bedroom. A quick turn left and straight ahead is the kitchen while on the right is the much larger chamber that is supposed to be a living room. Instead, it's got her studio lights, camera, tripod, tables and desks of stuff for projects, painting, soldering, assembling, 3D printing, filming, or a combination. Across from that is the guest room, on the right of that door being her computer station.
GM: Ethan sets his backpack down. He pulls a laptop out, with an oculus rift poking out of the back of the bag.
"Oh, I brought a gift. I forgot to mail it, so here~"
He pulls out a framed picture - it's her! Chibi-fied in his preferred artstyle. Instead of a wheelchair, she's sitting in a mecha.
Valerie: "Whaaat?" She turns to look at it. "That's adorable!" She beams. "Might have to deck my chair out in that style for a future project. Thanks!"
GM: He laughs, handing it off to her while he gets set up with art tools and his laptop.
"Welcome~"
Valerie: She takes it and gives it a look around. Could actuate the legs by gearing off her wheels, that could be neat... She sets it on her lap and rolls on ahead to her usual filming surface and sets it down so it'll be in one corner of the shot, along with a few of her 3D printed figurines. Set pieces!
"So I was thinking we'd set three webcams to get a general shot of everywhere, and use Motion Plus to detect where we're working at the time."
GM: The main trouble would be, is she strong enough to move them? Maybe if she had a really strong little engine...
"Sure. Point me where - I'll set up the scene. I've got an extra camera I can use by hand, if we want some closeups."
Valerie: "One here near the computer, one we can hang up by the window - there's a hook there - and one next to the kitchen door facing the 3D printer. And here's a Christmas light's worth of USB cables, the hub's in the corner, so... good luck." She snickers. She holds out the bundle of stuff.
GM: He laughs, taking it from her hands. He goes over to her little table to start sorting it out.
"So what's new in life? I remember last night you mentioned you were having a checkup with some fancy doctor soon."
Valerie: "My last doctor's moving soon, and this new one is moving in, and agreed to take my folder. I'm not seeing her for a fancy reason - the usual make sure my legs don't turn into dried worms thing and that my upper body stays functional - but she's got medical R&D experience, so she's got fancy history ." Val starts to set up the main camera for the filming part, and to get the PS4 laptop bundle out into view for the first shot.
GM: "That sounds awesome."
Once he has a few wires sorted out, he starts plugging them into hubs, then setting up tripods. He's got a good eye for framing a scene - he does art and photography, as well as video games, so he has a broad base of skills.
Valerie: "What about you? Where are you taking your art stuff next?" She moves to the computer to get the software set up - pausing to tweet out that they're setting up for the stream.
GM: "I dunno. I've tried to break into a proper animation studio, but even if they weren't slave labor, they're hard to get into. I'm thinking of pitching a project, though."
Valerie: "Yeah? What is it?" She sets image-inside-image for two of the webcams with the main one taking up most of the screen, with some space for her overlay. ...she then does a quick google to add Ethan's logo on it, too. Only fair.
GM: "A science-fiction cartoon! Action-comedy. I've got concept sketches on my laptop if you'd like to see. I've got a contact helping me out, too - she's interested in taking it to producers she knows in Hollywood."
Valerie: "I hope that works out. The world can always use more cartoons."
GM: Once he's logged onto the wifi, he opens a large folder and casts it to her screen to share.
Valerie: She starts to go through the folder, curious of what he's got running through his head.
GM: "So these are the main characters," he says, showing off a crew of humans, aliens, and a robot. It's not his usual cutesey style - she never knew he had traditional animation chops.
Valerie: "A neat insight to see a different side to your art."
GM: "Yeah, I don't have a lot of call for this kind of stuff," he says, flipping through stunning shots of interstellar vistas and strange planets. There's a definite hint of Forgotten about the characters - the sparky female captain, the quiet navigator, the brash pilot. Enough that it might be concerning.
Valerie: Then again, there has to be a niche for people who feel the void the show who would give support for this. "If Hollywood doesn't pick it up, you considered making it indie?"
GM: "I have! It'd be expensive, but - I dunno, I feel really passionate about it."
He chuckles to himself. "Some nights? I swear it's like the characters come to talk to me about it while I sleep."
Valerie: "I know all about interesting dreams, lemme assure you."
"If you do make it and want to think merch, look me up. They'd make great episodes to bring some of these props to life. Or model and 3D print some of these as figurines."
GM: "I'd love to~"
He rubs his chin, looking at her thoughtfully. "Actually, if we could make some stuff for my presentation next week, that'd be really cool. You could come, too."
GM: "If you'd like."
Valerie: "Send me some concept art of what you'd consider to be your most marketable character and I can see about getting you a physical model to show off with."
"As for coming along, err... I'd.. have to think about that."
GM: His cheeks darken with a blush. "Yeah, of course. So why don't we order some lunch and get started on the stream? The East Coast crowd'll be ready to tune in by the time we're done."
Valerie: She flushes a bit herself. She'd like to support his endeavour, but traveling to a strange place to meet strangers and see someone getting judged by them... is its own thing. She does cling to the change of topic, though.
"There's a chicken place that does online ordering and delivery. You keen?"
GM: "I'm so keen. I can strip mine a chicken like you have no idea."
He pulls his wallet out
Valerie: "Sounds like something I'd like to see." She turns back to the computer. "I'll get a whole one with some fry wedges. If we split it down the middle, your part will be $8."
GM: He slips out the required cash, leaving it on her counter in easy reach.
He does an equipment check in the background. To her delight, her sister hasn't poked her nose in on Skype - if she set this up, then she's doing a fantastic job of hiding it. "Testing, 1 2 3."
Valerie: "Audio's good, and OBS is seeing the cameras. If you could turn on the two lights and we'll be good to go."
GM: With a double click, soft, studio lighting fills the room. It's so nice having a pair of mobile hands to do this with - if she's lucky she gets her sister.
Valerie: She's been meaning to 'automate' some of this stuff, though she's a bit limited by how much stuff she can hang up in the apartment. If it was a house, maybe.
'Going live with @nowayhome! Behind the scenes of recording next episode of Wire Nest. Wrapping up portable PS4!' plus the URL, then she hits live, keeping an eye on it a bit to make sure it works.
GM: There's already a few people in there, and when it goes live they start really lighting up.
{OMG! Hi!}
{They're really there! hi Wire!}
{Do you two live nearby or something?}
{They're so cute together!}
GM: "Hey everyone, this is Noway here with Wire, comin' atcha live from our studio in downtown San Francisco!"
Valerie: Remind me not to look for rule34 shippers.
"Sup, guys. As you can see from my kitchen in the background, this is totally a professional setup."
GM: He's always had a more active personality on camera.
"Absolutely, we won't be interrupting for live coverage of lunch in fifteen minutes or anything. So Wire, what're we doing today?" he asks, already starting to live-cast a quick drawing of the two of them together in the apartment.
Valerie: "For the stream watchers' purposes, we're filming an episode of Wire Nest while everyone gets to see me do three takes for every line. In it, I'll be putting the final touches on the PS4 portable. That means building the top of the case, getting the screen-stopper in place, and getting the battery which finally arrived a couple days ago wired up to power the whole thing. Then we'll close it all up, a bit of painting and some extra LEDs for class, then we might play a round or two of Rocket League on it to commemorate."
GM: {What's Noway going to do?}
{Yes, what is your cute slave going to do?}
Valerie: "Hahaha!.. hahem, uhh, Noway will be replacing my Helping Hands. I'll have him hold wires, move my tripod and face the camera, hand me my tools, and the exciting job of doing stuff that would normally need me to roll around the project or view it from above, like lining up the top half of the case with the bottom half. Between that, he'll be sketching up a storm and letting me know if there's any decent question that pop up I could answer for you guys."
"Also he'll be on camera as my soundboard to mooch all those extra views from his channel, wink wink."
GM: {eeee they're so cuuuute}
{do Forgotten OC drawings, Noway!}
"So let's get the project underway, shall we? What's the first step, Wire?"
Valerie: "Step one, if we go to camera three, you can bring the filming camera with you.." She rolls on over to the notebook that serves her 3D printer and waits for him to get situated. "We'll get the top of the case going. I showed this model last episode, the only change I made was on the underside, since I switched to the beefier battery. The PS4's guts are relatively energy efficient, but they're still hungry."
GM: Her shadow shadows her, setting things up and vastly speeding the process along. He scootches a figurine out of the way so it doesn't get knocked over by accident.
"What kind of battery are you using?"
GM: He turns the camera up to his face while she gets her tools together. "Straight mad science, yo," turning it back to catch her as she's ready.
Valerie: "We'll be using a LiPo - or lithium polymer - like I usually do. More specifically.." She takes out a small brick wrapped up in foil. "This lovely specimen. I could have gone with something smaller, but, you know me, I idolized Gunpei Yokoi and if you're gonna be on a go, make sure it can survive for as long as possible. Specifically, it'll hold enough juice to keep the PS4 going for 8 hours - more if you drop the brightness and play off wi-fi."
GM: "Wow, that's like half my average day playing."
Valerie: "More than you need if you're playing in a hotel room, for sure. I'll go ahead and wire in the charging circuit now - making sure I attach ground first! You don't want a short circuit with any lipo, especially not this bad boy."
GM: {You know what Tim Allen says - MORE POWER!}
{Baby'll go up like a Samsung tablet}
{HaAHA BURN!}
{!!!REAL WEREWOLF FOOTAGE!!! Have to see it to believe it!
youtu.be/Wta34tw4ym353 Network Zero has the TRUTH!}
{Fucking spam. Mods?}
Valerie: "Don't worry, TaliZero should be hopping on in a couple minutes to start swinging the banhammer." She brings solder and iron together - slide the wire in, heat pad and wire, make a bead, withdraw. Ground, 5 volt line, 7 volt line, 12 volt line. "And to keep things nice and compact and make sure the wires don't move - hot glue, the tinkerer's duct tape."
Valerie: "It goes in with the power jack on the back, and for a test..." She holds down the button to make sure the battery does its job.
GM: (Roll Intelligence + Craft + Appropriate Specialty~)
Valerie: (1 succ)
GM: She didn't make any critical mistakes, which means Ethan won't be putting out any fires today!
Valerie: "Aaand, voila. Screen's on, and..." The PS4 chime rings up out of the speakers. "Audio. I can hear the blu ray spinning, the LEDs are good. Mwah." She makes an Italian kissy gesture. "Like magic."
GM: Ethan laughs.
"You heard it here, folks - Wire is a wizard."
GM: {Holy shit that's so cool}
GM: {Electronics wizard. What would you call that?}
{Wire Witch}
GM: {Wire where'd you learn to do this?}
Valerie: "I kinda like that. Rename the show Wire Witch Den." She turns off the PS4 to clamp everything into place for when she gets the top back on. "As for how I picked it up, I did a technical diploma in Electronics and Mechanical engineering. The rest, though, and how to apply it to video games, I self-taught."
Valerie: "Airbrush painting, 3D design and printing is futzing around with the tools until it worked. There were many failures."
GM: {How do you stay so cute?}
{Marry me!}
{Hhaha no man, marry Noway}
{Excuse me? Are you really a witch?}
{Shipped}
"So what designs are we going to slap on this bad boy?" Ethan asks, turning the camera to face her like an interview.
Valerie: She blushes a bit at the comments. Those folks, honestly. She turns back to the camera. "The top of the case has these bevels. There'll be LEDs along the way in the top that will feed into these." She lifts up a long strip of cloudy tubing. "Diffusing wire. You know in StarCraft 2, the Ghost outfits with the moving light things? Well it'll kinda do that. They're low current LEDs, so it'll be negligible. Really bring up the techiness to the level of the 90s though."
GM: "Haha that's so rad. The 90s are in anyway - like the 80s were back in the 2000s, we all remember that right?"
{dude i was born in 2000}
{2002!}
{I mean... if you're really a witch I could use some help. if anyone here knows anytihng about magic, please, I'm stuck in the internet and I can't seem to get out}
{I was born in 04!}
"God, all of you are kids."
{'86, represent}
{Hey there. I'm an electrical engineer, 30 years in the business - I'm willing to bet I'm the oldest person here.}
{Offtopic come on internet-person}
Valerie: "Way to make us feel old." She snickers. "Well, I guess we're babies to some of you out there. Hah, well... If I was stuck in the internet, I'd stick to safe websites that are low on graphics until there's a way out," she says, playing along. People bring their strange memes to the darnest places. "Like Elastique.de. Beautiful minimalism designs, plenty of space to stretch your legs."
GM: A message pops up on her Trillian. Same username - Ashlyn Brent, unsolicited account.
{No, I'm serious. I'm literally trapped in like - this place with floating screens and shit. Or I guess now it's kind of a representation of your room?}
Valerie: ...uh huh. How'd they get her IM? 'I'm afraid that's outside my expertise.'
GM: Ethan, unaware of the private conversation, is posting up new art - him in a hotel room playing the PS4-top
Valerie: "Jeez, you're a beast. How are you cranking those out so fast?"
GM: "Long years of practice and a very, very expensive tablet~ Also these are embarrassing sketches don't look oh my god."
Valerie: "Too late, we all saw them." She snickers, then rolls over to the 3D printer to take the plate off of the print bed, double checking it. Then back to the case to fit it up over the screen, nice and snuggly. "So now that we got the top part of the case, just need to screw in the screws. The LEDs are popping through these 5 holes... Slide in the diffusing tubing, and when we turn on the whole thing..."
A 'bulb' of blue light slowly moves from one end to the next in a loop as the LEDs fade in and out in turn to simulate it. "And here we have it. PS4 portable, with a screen with two angles, plenty of battery life, HD screen and everything you could ever need, with ideal clamshell design for compactness. I'll just need to find myself a decent bag to hold it and some controllers."
GM: {I wonder if I can...}
The printer fires on.
GM: Starting to lay down a layer of material before sputtering to a stop.
GM: The lights flicker
GM: The stream light goes down, then back on again a few seconds later.
GM: Chat was wondering if there was an earthquake, pleased to see them again
Valerie: She blinks at that. That's... not really possible. Her notebook isn't connected to the internet, so it can't get hacked. So what the hell? {What did you do??}
Valerie: "Sorry about that, looks like a bit of a technical snafu.." she says, albeit hesitantly.
GM: {I tried to - what was that?}
There's another flicker.
Ethan blinks.
"Is there something wrong with the electrical here?"
GM: {Oh shit, OH SHIT! I gotta run!}
GM: The apartment came with a few fluorescent bulbs, and the only one on right now is the one in the kitchen
GM: With the next burst of static, it shrieks and shatters, spilling glass and mercury on the table where the remains of their lunch lay
GM: Ethan jumps, staring
Valerie: "Ack..!" She raises her hands in surprise, glancing back at it. "I.. don't know. They were fine before."
GM: "...Jesus Christ..."
He turns to look at the stream. It pops back on when OBS establishes a connection with Twitch again.
GM: The two of them looking back at their own images with freaked-out expressions
GM: {Holy fuck that was scary}
{Never said this was an early Halloween stream. It's what, the middle of July?}
GM: {#TrumpPence2016!} *banned
Valerie: There's a bit of time as she's quiet, then she coughs. "So, hahem... that got weird. Sorry about that, guys."
Valerie: "I think we'll wrap up here. We got some ..glass to sweep up and copper coil to dispose of."
GM: {Aww}
{It was totally cool watching you work!}
{Engineer guy here - you've got a really good eye. You should consider getting your masters}
(Roll for Integrity)
GM: This time, when her stream shuts down, it's at her direction, leaving it on the splash.
Valerie: "You, uh, you okay?" she has to wonder. She feels rather shook up.
Valerie: Especially with that unnerving IM message.
GM: "Yeah," he says, sounding a little more confident. He takes her hand - he's not looking at her, so it seems like an unconscious gesture, the sort of thing one does when confronted with the supernatural.
"What about you? You look kinda white - I mean, whiter than usual," he adds, to try and lighten the mood.
Then he notices he's holding her hand, dark and smooth against small and white, blushes, and quickly lets go.
"What happened there?" he asks, scratching at his fine dark hair.
Valerie: "I'm not sure. Someone sent me this weird IM, and I think they hacked my 3D printer, but it's not connected to the internet? And then this whole thing happened, so, I really don't know."
Valerie: She also draws her hand back, rubbing it with the other one with a blush of her own.
Valerie: Warm.
GM: The table is a mess, though it already was one. The glass fell mostly on the boxes from the chicken place - he wasn't lying when he said he could strip a chicken in seconds, he left barely more than a few tendons.
"I'm going to get a garbage bag for this. Under the counter - ? Ah hah."
While he works, he looks back at her, listening with a frown.
"That's just - crazy." He looks over at the printer, with the little spritz of hardening material.
GM: Carrying the bag, he puts it down near the trash bin and goes over to look it over. While he does, she notices something interesting on his screen.
GM: And now that she looks, it's cast onto the wall, too
GM: Behind, or above, or somehow layered into his image is a faint smaller shape - and a much larger one. Like burned-in shadows. The larger one extends claws from outside the frame.
Valerie: She watches him work for a bit after a quiet "Yeah- Thanks." She then turns to the screen and wall. She blinks and slowly rolls in closer to watch, leaning in a little to have a look. What's this...? That doesn't look like it's busted. She brings a finger up to poke the edge, where the pixels meet the edge, over it, as if she expected to feel something tangible there besides the monitor's surface.
GM: Her heart pounds, but nothing happens - and then the screen, and indeed his entire computer, crashes.
GM: "What was that?" he calls
Valerie: She draws her hand back in surprise. "Oh shit... I saw an afterimage on your computer, but soon as I got near it, it blue screened, then turned off."
Valerie: She glances to see if the computer is plugged into the outlet. Power surge?
GM: It isn't, it's all on battery right now. He has a cord but it's unplugged.
Going to check over his baby, he tries booting it back up and breathes a sigh of relief when it loads.
GM: When he tries to navigate back into the file, though, the autosave picked it up from before the after-image
Valerie: Then it must have been the screen she saw. Some sort of... tearing or whatever. "So I'm going to say... static? Maybe a power transformed busted on a nearby roof?" She goes over to her computer to check the news.
GM: Aside from last night's thunderstorm, today has been clear weather-wise. Nothing from her power company about outages.
GM: Nothing on their twitter either.
Valerie: "..there's no report of anything, but it might pop up later."
Valerie: She checks on Ashlyn Brent's IM.
GM: They're listed now as 'Away'
Cute.
Ethan flops onto the one chair in the living room, meant for her sister.
GM: "Well, this certainly was an exciting streaming event."
Valerie: "Sorry things got weird. I've run way more voltage through this place than this without issue. I'll contact my landlord to come have a look when he can."
GM: "It's okay. So... let's take this seriously for a moment. What just happened? Someone contacted us with weird messages saying they were trapped in the internet, then somehow they activated your printer, my laptop, and messed with the power a couple times."
GM: "If they're a hacker, could they do that?"
Valerie: "Well, no. The notebook I use for the 3D printer doesn't have wifi at all, it's just to feed files into the printer." She brushes a hand through her hair while her nerves settle. "Also, it happened right after he said he had to run. Like... something happened. The image on your computer, too... they were like." She considers it. "Claw marks? Like some animal thing was resting its paw on your image, but from inside."
Valerie: "They could have faked that to your laptop, we're on Wifi, but the printer thing is the hiccup."
GM: He looks at her, head on hand.
"Okay, that is kind of freaky."
Valerie: "Yeah..." She nibbles at her lower lip.
GM: "...also reality check, if they are trapped in the 'internet' how do they reach a non-network device in the first place?'
GM: "I guess they could just be mistaken!"
Valerie: "...maybe through the power outlets? Like, they say trapped in the internet, but there were screens and shit, so, could just be in a server place. And they used internet-through-power wiring? I don't think San Fran is installing those, but I'm out of explanations."
GM: "Well! Notice that your printer just kinda spurted and gave up."
GM: "That might not be a command, that might be a power surge."
GM: "I mean, unless you find a log file in the printer or something."
Valerie: "That'd make sense. And didn't think of that!" She pulls a spare USB cable, then rolls over to the printer, if only from morbid curiosity. She pops the side panel and slips the cable into the programming jack of the control board, then plugs it into her notebook to navigate to the troubleshooting app and check what on earth it was.
If Ethan is right, it should wrap up the print for the PS4 case as the last entry..
GM: Just gotta load up the log and...
Plate, and right above it, during the stream -
2:16pm: Ending Project "please-work"
2:15pm: Error
2:15pm: Beginning Project "please-work"
Valerie: "...uhhh. Come.. look at this."
Valerie: She sees about extracting the please-work project and open it in Slicer to look at it. What on earth was he trying to print?
GM: Ethan comes behind her chair to watch as she opens up the file.
It's - a bit odd. The perspective is messed up in a way she isn't sure she can put her finger on yet, but what it is is a version of her room.
GM: It's strangely distorted, and couldn't possibly print well.
Valerie: "That's what he sent to the printer some.. how. Which I'm.. guessing is what he meant by a representation of my room? As in what he saw..?"
GM: "...maybe. I can't believe I'm taking this suggestion seriously. Also I think Ashlyn is a girl's name," he says, glancing at the IM window.
"Should we try - contacting them?"
Valerie: "They're away, but.. I guess can try?"
{Hello?}
GM: Pause. Wait.
They wait a while.
"...well, maybe they'll get it again soon."
He slides back.
Valerie: "Yeah. I'll keep an eye on it." She leans back in her chair and, for now stays quiet, trying to digest all of ..this.
GM: Meanwhile, Ethan starts to clean up, making himself useful while he thinks. He doesn't get very far in thinking, but he does get her apartment back in shape, minus one lightbulb.
Valerie: She starts to navigate the 3D model of her room. What if she prints it? With a bit of modification to sturdy it up, at least. She rolls over to her main workstation to start thickening the walls up where needed.
GM: Yeah, that's a thing she can do (Crafts + Int)
Valerie: (3 succ~)
GM: (nice :D)
That looks pretty good! Strutting it without compromising the vision.
Now, to get it printed. It could take a while, of course - several hours, not counting if she wants to sand it later.
Valerie: She puts it on a USB key, then brings it over, cleans up the 3D printer, then gets the file loaded and started. It'll be a while, but she can just leave it and look at it when it's done.
GM: Meanwhile, Ethan's run out of things to do, after dismantling the cameras.
"Well... I suppose I should think about getting home," he says after a moment.
Valerie: "Uhm..." She tries to think of a reason to ask him to say without sounding desperate or scared, but fails to come up with anything compelling. "..okay. I'll let you know if there's any, uh development."
GM: Awkward pause, awkward pause.
"Yeah okay. Call me if you need anything?"
Valerie: "I will." She smiles up at him. "Thanks for coming. Hopefully we can do it again without... bizarreness."
Valerie: "And I owe you a guest appearance in your own videos anyway."
GM: "Yeah you do~ I'll catch you later, then."
He departs then. It may be a moment of mutual Idiot! Ask to stay, ask to stay!
Valerie: The only thing that comes out is a "See ya." Then when he's gone, she sighs and leans back in her chair. Why does she fail at words? They're not that difficult.
GM: Oh well. It was probably her best stream ever - they're going to share that one for a while, and her job on the PS4-top is flawless.
GM: And maybe she'll hear from Ashlyn again sometime...
Valerie: Maybe she can use the footage of things freaking out for joke moments in her videos, too. Well, for now, she has to head up to her computer and put on some soothing music to calm herself down. And thinking on it, now seems like a decent time to call her dad - hearing his voice might calm her down a bit too.
GM: Parking herself in her living room, she sits near the window and listens to the ring.
"Hello?"
Valerie: "Hey, dad. It's Val."
GM: "Oh hey, sweetheart. How's my little imagineer doing?"
Valerie: "Got a power surge or something like that that made a bit of noise, but otherwise I'm doing alright. Got a good bit of video footage for my next one and I finished my latest game console project. What about you?"
GM: "I swear, you get all that from your mother."
She can hear him shifting around the house, the clank of a pan against the stove.
"I'm doing - " He starts coughing, then hacking.
For a moment, he doesn't say anything, then he takes a deep breath.
"Well... I was going to say I'm doing fine."
Valerie: She winces at the sound, and waits for him to recover. "..When's your next checkup?"
GM: "Monday," he sighs, focusing on breathing for a bit.
"I understand you're seeing your doctor then, too."
Valerie: Hopefully they find something to alleviate it. Last thing she wants is her dad suffering. "Yeah, then too. She's a new doctor. Medical research staff changing to be a GP to replace my old doc, too, so she should know what she's doing to keep my upper body hale and hearty."
GM: "I'm glad. Have any of them talked about - well, different treatments?"
Valerie: "We talk about it, but there's no concrete, like... implant that's come out yet that I know of. Maybe she'll have heard of something."
Valerie: "Wouldn't mind just something that lets me wiggle my toes."
GM: "Well, no matter what, you're my little girl and I'll always-" he goes into another hacking fit, one she has to weather - though unlike the storm, this isn't a pleasant thing.
"...I'll always love you."
Valerie: She stays as strong as she can as he goes through it. Haven't they gone through enough to throw sickness into the mix? "I love you too, dad. Drink plenty of water for me."
GM: "I will, promise."
He lets her go then. The city is stained gold and red by the now-setting sun.
GM: How much Arielle feel? She's as healthy as a horse, but her mother died of complications, her father might... be dying. Her sister is broken.
GM: What survivor's guilt is she carrying?
Valerie: She sets her phone down on her desk and looks back outside. It's part of why Val feels so bad when the resentment bubbles up. It's not like it's her fault she survived intact.
Hopefully that girl will keep her cheerful for a long time.
GM: She gets pretty absorbed. The printer dings to grab her attention.
Valerie: She unbraces her wheels and makes her way over to it, grabbing her palette knife to slide it under and free the print from the bed so she can give it a look over.
GM: Slicer is nice, but being able to actually see it in real life is something else entirely, even if it's still rough from the printer.
The scene is... nightmarish. And in full color - she left it largely "as is" aside from the new struts. Without the power surge getting in the way, she now has an Internet Prisoner's eye view of her home.
The colors are darker, faded. Screens show static, picked out in little specks of black and white color. The door is cocked at an angle, larger at the top than the bottom, the opposite effect going on at her desks. There's no sign of her or Ethan,
Valerie: Wow, this is... messed up... She can't imagine someone just, living in a place like this. She sets the thing down and snaps a few shots from a few angles before forwarding them to Ethan, along with a :S face.
GM: {That's some fucked up shit right there.}
GM: {Notice how it has all your little tools and stuff, too? Whatever was put down.}
Valerie: {Yeah, there's even the PS4 there, and the soldering station is where I put it while I was soldering. So it's... a 'live' snapshot I guess, viewed from behind a fishbowl.}
GM: {It isn't from any of the angles either - I mean, unless you have an invisible 3D camera in the middle of the room that's wildly inconsistent about its scale.}
GM: {though hey, for all I know this is an elaborate prank being played on me~}
Valerie: {I wish I had the knowhow to prank you that well.}
GM: {Yeah that would be legit. You okay, by the way?}
Valerie: {Yeah, my pulse returned to normal a while back.}
GM: {Okay, cool~}
Valerie: {Will let you know if I hear back from Ashlyn.} She sets her phone back down and gives the strange room parody another look over. Double weird.
GM: ...oh well. Nothing she can do now. Not yet, anyway.
What will she do for the next while?
Valerie: She'll start with a sandwich before putting her PS4 to some use. A bit of mindless sawing open demons for health picks up would do her good.
GM: They never got to play together, either :<
Valerie: Next video, once the weird... internet prisoners are dealt with.
GM: ~
The next evening, and indeed most of the next of the next day, are actually fairly uncomplicated, allowing her time to recoup
GM: Sunday night dreaming, things get a bit - weird.
One of the characters from Ethan's new concept shows up, the navigator. She sits and chats with her a while, asking what she thinks of the idea, and then she wakes up to her alarm, on the day she's to meet her new doctor.
GM: The girl looked so much more like Lethe in her dream it was uncanny.
GM: Even if she was in a different outfit, without the lantern
Valerie: It's rather meta, isn't it, to dream of someone's concept based on the concept from another show. She was nice, though, and it was a nice chat about the show idea and the concepts she saw.
Once she's up (sort of up,) she can clean up, get clothed. Her first instinct is to call her sister, but she's probably going to be coming back from the romantic getaway today and can't give her a lift. Right, forgot... So she has to go nab her bus pass from her desk, make sure she's got everything she needs - health card and documents and the like - before she gets to roll out into the day.
GM: Uber has a handicap accessible service, but she's already riding a very thin line where her finances are concerned, mostly as a result of having low income and disability.
GM: Heading out into a cloudy summer morning, she makes her way to the bus stop, enduring the looks of others as she wheels her way down, shepharding her useless legs. No one draws attention to it, of course, no one says anything, but they can all see her.
Her insurance is fantastic, at least, and they're a lot more professional about it, smiling and never once treating her as if she had anything different about her.
Valerie: If she could secure some sort of pre-paid pass on the cheap, maybe, but paying per-ride isn't exactly how she'll manage her budget.
Even if people don't look at her, or don't treat her differently, or don't talk about it... she still feels exposed. She judges herself more than they judge her, and she can't really help it. She should be thankful of what she has but...
At least they're nice. She hands her documents over and signs the entry forms as needed so she can see her new doc.
GM: A nurse helps her into the seat, and then it's just time to wait.
Her doctor, when she comes, is a pretty young thing with color in her hair.
"Hello - Valerie, right? I'm Doctor Srinivasi."
Valerie: She's got her phone out when the doctor comes in, then she stuffs it away and sits up. "Hi. And that's right, Valerie Beaudry. ..nice to meet you."
GM: She takes her hand, and goes through her chart.
WIth her legs up, it's painful to notice how atrophied they are by comparison. Her PT does exercises to keep them from dying completely, but...
"I have some news. I think you're used to news by now. Your last doctor had some tests run, you might recall."
Valerie: So much for massages and creams and frequent washing keeping them looking normal despite them not moving. Bleh... Though that there's news on top of everything brings her back to Dr. Srinivasi. "I remember... What did they say?"
Is she ill, too?
GM: She sets the chart aside.
"Your nerves are still partially connected - not enough to maintain sensation, but enough that they aren't severed. We were hoping that would be enough to prevent nerve degradation."
GM: "Unfortunately, it seems that isn't the case. Your nerves are slowly dying from the tips of your legs up. In a few months, you won't have any left, and there will be no saving them."
Valerie: "..." She reaches down to rub at her thighs self-consciously. "So even if some.. reconnection spinal implant comes out in a few years, it wouldn't do me any good.."
GM: She nods.
"By then? It would be too late. It's possible, maybe, that we could get you in for experimental procedures now, but - well, that's complicated. And there's another matter."
Valerie: "Sure, let's play a round of jenga." She sighs. "Sorry... go ahead."
GM: She offers a sympathetic look.
"We're seeing signs of degenerative disc disease - and it isn't restricted to the parts of your spine that were damaged. We're not sure why - even with your trauma, you're very young for this sort of illness to set in. However, I can promise you that it's a very treatable disease, and it's good we caught it when we did. If you weren't getting regular checkups, you might hvae lived with back pain for a while before anyone would have found it."
GM: Her back is disintegrating. Her actual back.
GM: The functional part.
Valerie: She rubs a hand over her face and breathes into it a couple of times. It's bad enough not to be able to walk. The idea that she'd become immobile save her eyes and mouth if she's lucky is horrifying. "Okay, so... that's treatable. What's the treatment?"
GM: "Steroidal injections and anti-flammatory medication. I've alraedy alerted your usual PT doctor about some new procedures."
GM: "If there's no resolution within 2-3 months, we'll do some minor surgery, and you should be good."
GM: By which point a lot of her legs will be lost. It's like she's falling apart.
Valerie: She nods quietly, glancing down at her legs. "Is there.. anything to keep my legs? Slow it down?"
GM: "Unless we can restore any sort of nerve signalling, I'm afraid not."
She gives her a quiet look. "I'll see if I can't get you into any trials - but I can't promise miracles."
GM: She slips a pamphlet out of her papers then.
"Now that all of the bad news is on the way... I wanted to talk to you about one of those experimental treatments."
"What we'd essentially do is attempt to artificially propagate signals from the healthy nerves down to the damaged ones. Whether or not we'll be able to do it will depend on the progress on your disk degeneration. It also goes without saying that this is not a covered treatment. I'll see if I can't get you into the trial, but if not - well, you might end up having to pay out of pocket. I'm sorry - this is the best I can do, but I promise I'm batting for you at every stage."
Valerie: She takes the pamphlet and flips through it, tilting her head. "About... how much do you estimate I'd be looking at?" she asks. Any price would be worth it, but being able to raise it... maybe she can get her fans' help, but she feels bad relying on them.
GM: She waits a moment to be sure she's braced.
"About a hundred and fifty thousand dollars."
Valerie: Her mouth open, then clamps shut and she stares at her, bug-eyed. What! "Do you take Jesus' spinal nerves or something??"
GM: With a doctor's professional calm, she manages not to laugh, but she does smile. "There's a lot of factors that go into the cost, but this is a very new treatment. There's only one medical group in the world that specializes in it, and they have quite a few people clamoring to join the trial."
Valerie: She leans back and chews on it for a few moments. "....well, I.. don't really have much choice.. I'll.. look at my options," she says quietly. "If you can get me on the list."
GM: "I'll see what I can do. You're young and otherwise in good shape - you should be a good candidate."
Valerie: "Cost aside, at least." She puffs a breath. "..anything else, while I have my composure?"
GM: "Nope. Just a clean bill of health all around. Your muscles are in good shape, you've been dedicated about your PT I can see."
GM: "In general? Live like you expect you're going to walk again."
Valerie: "I'll," She sighs. "I'll do my best to think about that."
GM: "I know it's difficult, but you need to maintain your exercises, especially as we go into treatments for the disk therapy. I'll give you the prescriptions - you can have them mailed to you or pick them up at the pharmacy, as you wish."
Valerie: She nods, pulling her chair in closer to pull herself into it. "Okay." If she sounds like she's not reacting maybe she won't break apart before she's somewhere private.
GM: "Let me show you the way out," she says, going to open the door, letting her roll past, her useless, dying legs in front of her as she rolls out into the hall
Valerie: She wheels along, having to swallow as they move through. She almost makes it to the reception area before there's a quiet gasp, the idea sinking that there's a strong possibility that, at best she'll be like this even with medical advances, and at worse be a burden to someone else she depends on. "S-sorry, I can't.." She hugs herself, shivering.
GM: Maybe she can get loans. Large, expensive loans that would make it impossible for her to meet her obligations.
Maybe her dad can help - even though he's got his own bills. Her grandparents? Her Nana is still alive, she hasn't spoken to her in a long time, but she has money, right?
...a hundred thousand dollars.
Doctor Srinivasi crouches by the chair, taking her hand in both of hers. Indian extract, her long dark hair smooth down her back.
"It's okay. We'll take care of you."
Valerie: She gives a little nod, but the tears flow in earnest. Could she run a GoFundMe? Fund raiser, or start selling her projects on ebay or something? This is so overwhelming.
It takes her a while of trembling and crying before she calms down enough to wipe her face. "I'm alright, now - thank you.."
GM: She pats her hand.
"It's all right. None of us should have to deal with things like this."
Looking out the window at the clouded skies, she can't help but feel the same. Rays of sunlight dance through it - sometimes, she can't help but feel there should be a better world. Why should she dream of being whole, if all it does is remind her of how broken she is?
Valerie: If she could just move to her dream world, it'd be a much better world. Or bring her body from there out here, something like that. She draws a deep breath and lets it out in a long sigh. Once she's ready, she resumes rolling towards the doors.
GM: Somewhat listlessly, she fetches her new prescriptions. Great - more drugs. And she has to come in for yet more steroid injections.
GM: And more tests
Valerie: She sets the baggy of anti-inflammatories in her chair's backpack. She just wants to disappear home and never emerge. She starts to make her way towards the bus stop. "May as well get them amputated now.."
GM: With that pleasant thought, she makes her way home. A long bus ride, then the struggle of getting into her apartment.
Now, to plan what to do with the rest of her day...
Valerie: She moves over to her desk and sets her stuff on it, reading the prescription instructions in a bit of a daze, then sets up her pill calendar accordingly.
She stares out the window for a while, then pulls her cellphone off her desk. She.. really needs a nice voice right now. Val brings up Messager to text her sister. {Are you around?}
GM: {Yup! How did your appointment go?} she asks, while her sister gets a large glass of water to swallow her first horse pill
Valerie: Ugh, she hates the big ones. She takes a sip, pops the pill, then fills most of her mouth up to start forcing her throat until it goes down. {Can I call?}
GM: {Of course! Anytime.}
Valerie: She pulls up the contact list to dial her up.
GM: Her sister chirrups at her in their little language, pleased to hear from her.
Valerie: "Heya. How'd the date go? Or is going?"
GM: "She went home - after she stayed the night when we got back," she giggles. "It went great! Honestly, I felt like I was on top of a cloud. It was the best weekend I've ever had - and apparently I'm one hell of a kisser, because she was swooning like you wouldn't believe."
Valerie: She closes her eyes with a smile. "I'm happy to hear that. I'd like to meet her at some point. I'm curious what it is that got you all airheaded and giggly like that."
GM: "I know, right? Me of all people."
GM: "So - come on. I can hear that tremor in your voice. We have the same voice."
Valerie: She hesitates for a bit before going ahead. "I just needed to hear something nice first. I'm glad things are going well for you." She nibbles at her lower lip. "Things didn't go well."
GM: "What's wrong, my soul?"
Valerie: "My legs' nerves are deteriorating, from the tip up. In a few months, they'll just be dead, and even if my spine spontaneously heals itself, my legs wouldn't work even then.
"Plus, I've got a degenerative disc disease developing, and it'd turn me into a prison for my mind. ...It's treatable with medicine and steroid injections, apparently, or a surgery if that doesn't pan out.
"They.. have an experimental treatment they'll try to get me on a list for. But.. but it'd cost 150 grand. And I broke down in the hospital, and I just feel like disappearing."
GM: For a moment, her sister is silent. She can hear a little choking noise - the same sound she makes when she's really upset.
"...I'm so sorry."
Valerie: "Yeah..." She draws a breath and sighs it out. "I needed to hear your voice, mostly. Something friendly."
GM: "Do you want me to come over? God, sis..."
Valerie: "Don't want to take your time too much."
GM: "Sis, we were literally one part. I can take time out of my day for you. I'll be there first thing after work."
Valerie: "Okay. I'll be staying in, so I'll be here... Thanks, Ari."
GM: "Okay. I'll see you later. Take care."
Valerie: "You too." She sets the phone down.
GM: She's practically shaking as she hangs up.
GM: It's like Arielle heard it happening to herself.
Valerie: A quick drink, a bit more self-pity, before she decides to distract herself with something - anything - to do. The weird 3D print comes to mind, so she goes over to her computer to see if Ashlyn ever responded. Either way, maybe she can find out about her and get herself a clue of whether she's a ... super hacker, or how she might have gotten 'stuck in the internet.' Some googling and facebooking follows.
GM: No message, but maybe a little research online wouldn't hurt?
(Intelligence + Computer, extended test, interval 1 hour - halved for you I believe!)
Valerie: (pow, 4 succ on first one.)
GM: (Haha nice. Your goal is 10, with a bonus for an exceptional success (which you can keep trying for as long as you like)
Valerie: So 0.5 - 4
1 - 5
1.5 - 5 ( =( )
2 - 10 (with a willpowered 5 succ).
GM: hahaha
GM: ~
Thanks to her highly focused mind, she's able to scour the internet for any hint of Ashlyn Brent.
The real trick, of course, is sorting her out from the hundreds of others with her exact name, but she has a pretty good idea of what to look for - disappeared persons, missing persons.
Over the past few weeks, there's been word circulating around about a mysterious person who comes into chat rooms begging for help before screaming and logging off.
What she also finds is that there's a girl from Dublin named Ashlyn Brent who disappeared about 5 weeks ago in late June. Her parents came up to her room to find it empty. Police searched nearby and found no traces. Her computer had been left on, but it had locked itself, and no one knew her password. If the police ever took it and cracked it, no one has said.
Valerie: Could she really have disappeared into the internet? That seems rather mind-boggling to imagine. How'd something like that even happen? And it's been weeks... being chased around by something? It seems like an elaborate hoax, but the 3D printer thing...
GM: Here's a great mysterious question - how would she get in touch with her?
GM: She may never come "back" to her
Valerie: She starts to go through what examples she can find of chatrooms she's frequented. Maybe there's a pattern and she can look for similar ones.
GM: So the question is - what might she revisit?
From what she reads, she started with certain chat rooms popular in Irelad and then somehow made the leap to the US (perhaps through an american-based user? The logic here is weird)
She then had a post on 4chan, and then suddenly she was everywhere, hopping around different parts of the globe.
Valerie: A rather dark thought occurs to her. If she's being propagated like.. like a file. Like a benign virus. Did Ashlyn from saturday... get killed? And there are copies repeating their... 'loop' of asking for help and then being chased down by anti-virus?
GM: The posts aren't simultaneous, that she can see
Valerie: How does she even tackle this? It's insane that she's even considering it!
Valerie: With little to go on, she forwards her research results to Ethan, in case he has ideas.
GM: He greets her, blissfully unaware of her medical issues, and starts reading through it.
{This is - super cool. Here's a thought - why don't we leave a post for her? Like - 4chan, or some other public place that she might be likely to see by accident?}
Valerie: {That sounds good. I'll try putting something on imgur. Kinda like one of those 'stop browsing imgur and call me' posts that make front page sometimes.}
GM: {Yeah okay. Make, like, a temporary email or number or something, don't want people flooding you with bullshit until the end of time.}
Valerie: {Yeah, good idea. I already get tons of messages as it is.}
She starts to set something up. An image meme of 'Ashlyn, over here ->' with a disposable address she'll keep open on her browser. ...then, on a whim, she tries putting her anti-virus on indiscriminate, but adds a filter with the word 'Ashlyn' and 'Brent'. She has no idea if it'd do anything, but.. maybe.
Valerie: Keep her safe or something.
GM: {How're things going aside from that?} he asks.
That damning phrase - how are you?
Valerie: How much should she say? He's nice and she doesn't mind sharing things with him, but, at the same time... She doesn't really like just talking about it.
{Not great, but I'd prefer not going into it yet, if that's okay.}
GM: {It's fine. If you ever feel like talking about it, you know I have your back, right?}
Valerie: {Yeah, don't worry. I know. ...thanks.}
GM: There's a few minutes pause before he adds: {maybe we could hang out sometime?}
Valerie: ... ...areh?
Valerie: {Hang out?}
GM: {Yeah, you know... Catch a movie or something}
Valerie: She blushes. He's asking her out? {Like...}
{A date?}
GM: Another pause.
{Yeah. Like a date.}
Valerie: There's a pause from her own. Then a stunned {I'd like that. But...}
But then it comes pouring out through her fingers. The degenerative disc, the dying nerves and the experimental treatment's cost, as a way of saying that dating her would be hard.
GM: {...oh god. I'm so sorry.}
{It's... Well.}
{Valerie? None of that matters to me. Well, I mean, it does because it's personally a very very big deal for you, but - if you like me, I like you. You're still the same person.}
{If you think it'll be difficult to date for you, and you don't want to put yourself through hardship - just say so. I'll never being it up again. It doesn't bother me, though, so if you're worried about how I feel, it's okay.}
Valerie: She rolls away from the computer for a couple minutes, reading his words in silence a few times over. She wipes at her eyes. This fucking guy...
She rolls forwards again. {Let's do it.}
GM: {Okay. I'm super busy with a school project tonight and tomorrow, but how about Wednesday?}
Valerie: {Okay. Wednesday is good. It's a date.}
She smiles at that. Well, that alleviated some of her moodiness. She pulls up her 3D software, suddenly feeling inspired to work on a character of his show. The Not-Lethe seems like a good choice, given Val got a good look at her in her dream...
GM: That nervous smile, tentatively pulled from her gloomy depths. The long black hair, over one eye - she has a way of popping out.
(We're going to jump ahead a while. Any long term tasks she'd like to commit to over the next week? :D
Valerie: She'll tell her sister about the date - and how the date goes after it happens. A bit of cheer goes a long way. She'll prioritize getting that figurine modeled, printed, puttied, sanded and painted for his presentation - which she'll accept to accompany him on.
Outside of that, she'll keep an eye on the provisional email - cleaning it up of spam periodically. The rest is her job - edit the video, film any bits and bobs missing, upload it, and make a 'WTF' compilation of when things went wrong and her light popped and startled the two of them on camera, offering to feature the funniest musical remix of the event in the next episode.
She'll also start looking at possible avenues for funding. Loan companies and banks, made-up budgets while brainstorming potential fund-raising ideas, or taking on a bigger workload of sponsored videos. She'll try to avoid going to her fans for help, however.
Valerie: Or even sniffing out some freelance work. Bound to be some companies who need prototyping, right?
GM: (Take an additional beat!)
GM: ~
It's a wonder how much and how little can change in a week. Her sister comes over to visit quite a bit more, and every time, she looks more and more miserable.
Yet, things with Ethan seem to have sparked off nicely. The date was nice - not spectacular. They didn't kiss. There's definitely something there though, beyond his boyish good looks and charm. They set up another date for next week, same day - lunch followed by a collab video, the promised game night (and, she hopes, presenting his figurine.)
The funding - is a bit more complex. Her credit is pretty good after paying down her student loan debt, but there's only so high she can go on her income. She can get a loan, but it'll be costly. Soliciting sponsored content is taking a while, but maybe she'll get a bite.
By next monday, she's got a GoFundMe account. She hasn't made it public or broadcasted it yet, but her YouTuber friends will pick it up, right? She'll reach a wide audience. Maybe Ethan can help her film a video for it.
As she contemplates these things, putting the finishing touches on his new figurine, Lethe standing there all shy (it's hard not to think of her as Lethe in a new costume), an email comes in. Then, almost simultaneously, Ashlyn Brent's IM window pops up again.
{It's me. Thank god - I've been trying to find someone who believed me, but it's been so hard. I'm so hungry.}
On her chair, Arielle snorts, shifting under her blanket. She's been staying here some nights.
Valerie: Val has to find to work through it. She doesn't want to drag Arielle down because of her health issues. She's got a bit of a script going for the campaign's video... It sucks to have to ask her fans who are already giving her money, but, well, she can't make them content if she's fighting necrosis for the rest of her life, can she? So that's the option before her.
Between her sister and Ethan, though, she's hanging in there. Keeping busy helps her mood from getting too dark once doing fun things is past. Her sleep hasn't been too good, though. She's resisting getting too much of it, but fighting out of a nightmare is a lot harder than controlling a dream.
There's quiet little 'psssht' as she airbrushes the last bit of color on her, a piece of cardboard held up as a mask to protect already painted areas. Highlights and textural interests. Though when she gets the message, she turns to roll over to the computer in a hurry.
{I don't know if I believe you exactly... But I have nothing to refute the evidence with, so for now I have to.} Before sending the message, though, she makes sure to add:
{If my theory is right, though, I think you're being chased, and I'm not sure what I can do to help here.}
GM: {I am. I don't know what it is - it just sort of, takes over an area, like the place itself is changing. I haven't dared to stay put for it, and I don't want to.}
The words appear across her screen in blocks. She's not typing - they just sort of appear, perhaps as she imagines them?
{Could you turn your webcam on? I can't see you like this.}
Valerie: {Okay.} She turns the chat into a video-chat. It's late and the main light is over her work area and her computer monitor. {Heya.}
GM: Her image pops up first, then there's a bit of lag - after a moment, she gets a staticy screen. Slowly, it begins to resolve, and a hazy view of a scared, gaunt teenager with long, lank red hair is looking back at her with hollow eyes.
"I didn't even think of this," she says, her voice distorted and crackling.
GM: "Maybe I can..."
She reaches up to the screen and it sharpens a bit more, though the more she does, the more her poor computer begins to lag
Valerie: She turns off some of the non-essential software to try and give a bit of extra juice. Jeez, what on earth is this? She's not even sure what to think. "Do you remember last time?" she asks to try and confirm or take out her theory. She keeps her voice low. Her sister is sleeping.
GM: "Of course."
Valerie: "Alright, that nixes that part, which is a relief..." She laces her fingers together. "..sort of. How... did that happen? The news report say you were just gone one day and your computer locked itself."
GM: "I loaded a program," she says. "I, uhm... I did some hacking. You know, breaking into email databases, that sort of thing."
Valerie: "Right."
GM: "I found a server full of some really weird shit. There's a few paths in there that I couldn't get into, but what I did see was crazy. It talked about magic and - and monsters."
Valerie: ..she wishes she could discount this with a roll of her eyes, but honestly, she's talking to someone who could very well be trapped in some cyberspace world. "And.. lemme guess, you tripped something even weirder?"
GM: "Yeah. I managed to get into one of the weirder paths, but when I did, a piece of malware sailed right through my filters and took over."
GM: "My computer started asking me questions, but I didn't understand - and then, I guess I failed, because it yanked me here."
GM: She lowers her head, a low moan escaping her lips. She starts crying, breaking down before her
Valerie: And here Val felt bad for having her legs paralyzed. "I'm sorry..." She bites her lip and waits for her to recover a little while she thinks on it. She looks past Ashlyn at the room behind her, to try and see the pattern. If... she brings food out into the room, would a distorted copy appear there too?
GM: Maybe. It does seem like things have a hazy reflection there. She can see the distortions that she saw - not quite as extreme, but present.
Valerie: "Let's try stuff. I mean... I have no idea, but, there has to be something I can do to help. Wait a sec." She turns her chair around and wheels on over to the kitchen. She opens the fridge and takes an apple out of the drawer, then wheels on over. She then sets it down in front of her on the desk, and lets go of it.
GM: After a moment, she snatches it off the table and begins eating hastily. Yet, in Val's world, it's still there.
"This is all I get to eat," she mutters between bites. "If I'm lucky, someone leaves food lying around. Usually it's like, chips or something, and - and it's like those don't have a lot of substance here? Like, the more processed it is, the more impossible to eat. Once I ate a whole bag of chips and - and I vomited it out. They just reformed on the ground, like I'd never eaten anything."
GM: "Sometimes I'll see - things like people or animals here, only they're made of circuits or electricity or whatever, and I keep away from them. I dunno if they're as bad as what's following me."
Valerie: This is weird. This discounts the idea of a prank because... that'd take some foresight to have a copy of the apple appear. "I couldn't hazard the first of guesses."
GM: "Sometimes I'll eat something and it's like I'm hallucinating, I'll remember other people's memories, or..." she sighs.
GM: She even eats the core, only tossing the stem away
GM: "I don't know what to do."
Valerie: "Well, I think we need to figure out how to secure where you are. Cause then I can bring you food and you can have it be a safe house until we... think of ..something. I mean, if this magic stuff was written down on a server, it had to have come from someplace, right?"
Valerie: "Then with some research, hopefully we find a... I dunno, counter curse, I guess."
GM: "I could tell you where the server is. I can't promise you'll be safe.."
Valerie: "Hold onto it for now. Let's see if we can't get you safe first. No offense, but, you look... haggard. I take it you haven't had much chance to sleep."
GM: She shakes her head.
"Snatches, now and then, I guess?"
Valerie: "Figured, yeah. Well, how do those... uh, things usually show up? If I can manipulate my environment to change yours."
GM: "Like, food and stuff?"
GM: "It's kind of weird."
GM: "Like, things people don't think about tend to vanish into the background."
GM: "Things they care about a lot more, like your printer or your figurines, show up clearer."
GM: "I guess because you intended to leave that apple for me, it showed up a bit more readily? It tasted better than normal, too."
Valerie: She nods, thinking on that. "What about the things chasing you?"
GM: "It sort of - takes over. The shadows get longer, and then things start changing. They grow claws or teeth and I have to get out of there before everything closes up. I don't want to see what happens if I don't."
Valerie: "I'm not keen on finding out either. ...they left a mark here, too. There was this afterimage on Ethan's screen, like .. a burnt in image of claws, but it wasn't exactly part of the screen. Like not made of a pixels. ..in any case, it crashed his computer right after."
GM: "I've noticed that when I try to leave things. I don't think our computers were built to handle this sort of thing."
Valerie: "Mine is spinning up something fierce."
Valerie: She looks to where she sets the stem aside on the desk, looking down at her own at the corresponding location.
Valerie: set*
GM: Nothing. Indeed, Ashlyn's stem seems rather ephemeral by comparison.
"I've been keeping on the move for the last few days. I don't think I've given it the slip, but - maybe I have a bit of a breather."
GM: "Sometimes I get a few hours."
GM: "Do you mind if I crash on your chair?"
Valerie: "Go ahead. Not like you'll be budging me or my sister. Uhm... I should probably set a timer to buzz your IM, like an alarm, right?"
GM: "Yeah. That'd be helpful."
She slumps against the desk, cheek planted against the screen.
"Is there anything I can do? Something to help you?"
Valerie: "I can't really think of anything... I don't even know what you can do from where you are."
GM: She nods weakly.
"I'm going to pass out, then. Buzz me if you find anything?"
She totters over away from the screen, and it goes staticy before the computer informs her that the connection has been lost.
Valerie: Val sets a series of delayed IMs to be sent 3 hours from now to act as the alarm. Then she leans back and, just... gawks at what is happening. This is insane. How does she even start?
Valerie: She seriously doubts googling 'magic' is going to be all that useful.
GM: Probably not give her many good results at all, no!
GM: Arielle snorts, coming awake
GM: She shivers, shifting up
Valerie: "Sorry, did I wake you?" She looks back at her.
GM: "I felt weird all of a sudden," she says, leaving her blanket behind. One wonders if Ashlyn is right now using that to curl up under.
GM: She stretches, with a series of powerful pops
GM: brushing a hand through her long dark hair, streaked with blue.
Valerie: She hopes so.. would be considerate, if not planned. Spontaneously, Val rolls over to her sister to draw her arms around her in a hug. Imagine people Ashlyn left behind... what she wouldn't do for Ari.
GM: Her twin wraps her in a hug, sighing.
"You okay, heart?" she chirps
Valerie: "Just glad I have you. Between you and Ethan I've been feeling pretty alright, all things considered, so... Thank you. Just wish you weren't driving yourself into the ground for my sake."
GM: She tigthens her grip about her.
"...I feel responsible," she admits.
Valerie: "You didn't decide to make it happen as it did. The car was totalled, we were lucky it wasn't through either of our internal organs."
Valerie: "I know I've said things I regret, but I don't mean to implicate you in it."
GM: "Everyone I know seems to get sicker and sicker, and I just keep getting - healthier."
She squeezes her eyes shut, her sister's head against her belly.
"Before the accident? I wished... I was jealous of you, because you were the outgoing one, you were the one everyone loved the most, except when they mistook me for you. And I wished - I wished that would change. I've hated myself for wishing that ever since."
GM: "I wished something would happen to make us different, and it did."
GM: "And I want to go back to the way it was."
Valerie: "Dad's seeing his doctor, I'm seeing mine. It's... it's a bad streak, but I'm working on the funds thing. Just need to get myself on the list and we can go back to looking one another in the eye, then we can focus on dad."
"You're making me the optimist, it's bugging me." She smiles up at her.
GM: She smiles down at her weakly, face wet.
"Yeah. I know, bad idea."
She rubs her nose and eyes. "And hey, look at you - a cute boyfriend and everything."
Valerie: "Yeah, things aren't going all too badly. If I can get my health back, I can even enjoy it."
GM: She squeezes her again and lets her go.
Valerie: "What you need is a milkshake. Should I whip you one up?"
GM: "Please."
GM: She laughs, going to sit on the edge of her chair.
Valerie: Val rolls back to the kitchen to get themselves a couple glasses of frothy ice cold vanilla goodness. Poor Ari... gotta get healthy so she doesn't feel as guilty about it. Val has to stop herself from being jealous.
She returns shortly, after some work with the blender and some pouring. - being doubly careful. Spilling anything now would just be sad.
GM: "Thanks," she says, accepting it and sipping.
"I was worried you were going to be pissed at me when I told you. I've kept that to myself since - well, before the accident, obviously."
Valerie: "You've told me plenty of times that I'm dumb for feeling guilty for resenting you, so it's my turn to tell you that it's dumb for you to feel guilty for being jealous." She sips at her own, eyes shutting. "Though it's surprising to hear. I tried to get you involved as often as I could cause I saw ourselves as the inseparable besties. ...then again, me taking charge so easily might have been part of the problem?"
GM: Arielle nods sadly.
"Yeah... kind of, honestly."
GM: "When we were little, real little? I thought of you like a part of me."
GM: She still does, sometimes
Valerie: It's where the heart and soul nicknames have popped up. Though Val feels a bit bad for not using them as much recently... she should probably pick it back up for old times' sake. "Just two halves of the same whole. I felt the same way."
GM: She squeezes her hand, already halfway through her milkshake.
"Is there anything you'd like to do today? I don't mean just to sap up your vital milkshake supplies."
Valerie: "The supplies are there for just such emergencies." She considers doing something. "Maybe a trip to the SF Public Library. There's something I've been meaning to look into, but for some reason I don't think I'll find it on the net."
Not where there's cyber guard dogs or whatever, after all...
GM: "The library? Yeah, sure, I guess. You ready to go?"
She gets a brush out of her bag, fixing up her hair
Valerie: "Gimme a sec and I will be." She wheels over to the kitchen to fix up some sandwiches - two to bring along and say that's why she's bagging these up, while she makes a third with a little note saying 'Out to Library'. "A bit of lunch while we're out there," she says, emerging, brandishing the brown paper bags. On the way out, though, she leaves the third one behind near the chair Ashlyn is hopefully sleeping in.
GM: Her sister doesn't notice the odd behavior, mostly because she isn't looking for it, and gets her shoes back on. They end up taking the bus, of course - only a fool drives down to the library - but with her strong, hale sister, the going is much easier, even if she has to put up with people watching her get carried in transitional points. She's faster in pushing the wheelchair, too.
They see a few people strung out on heroine not far from the library, leaning against a car, and homeless people tucked in alcoves. They pass a Wells Fargo and then cross a short street to the library. City Hall is visible from here - a beautiful dome across the walk-only street, with a statue of Nike in the center of the plaza. The library is ultra-modern, with a wall full of fiber optic cables displaying different events and names, and a rotunda where people gather to check out books in the center.
(Someone's actually been there. Someone's spent 4 hours waiting for Jax to get done with phone calls there :D)
Valerie: (hahaha)
Valerie: Val doesn't feel quite as self-conscious while she's with Arielle. A little, sure, who wouldn't, but at least she's with someone 'normal' so she can just look at her and not notice the looks. As always, the homeless and druggies' existence bother her. Feels like it shouldn't be a thing anymore, but given she's got her own set of problems - and something even weirder to deal with - there's only so much she can even do.
So, now that they're here, the question is what to search for. Conspiracy books? References to sorcery... occult societies, maybe. Rich folk were into especially weird shit, she's pretty sure.
GM: Perhaps a specific topic to guide her search
Valerie: The most likely thread connecting what she wants: Disappearances.
GM: Mysterious disappearances it is!
(Intelligence + Academics (Research) + 4. Just one check)
Arielle, meanwhile, goes to check out books that are relevant for her school work, sitting across from her sister.
Valerie: (well, I guess 1 succ is better than none.)
GM: (Hah :D)
GM: It's not especially productive. There's tons of disappearances that go on every single day - literally dozens of people on an average day across America.
GM: She does find some more specific info, though
GM: Specifically, on people who vanished "because of their computer" in some fashion, according to the people around them.
GM: Perhaps ten in the last year, Ashlyn Brent making the tenth.
Valerie: That does give her something to cross-reference, at least, though she has to wonder if anyone ever talked to someone like Ashlyn got to - and if so, if that was ever recorded.
GM: That's worth a computer search!
(Int + Computer)
GM: (+3)
Valerie: (oof)
GM: (0?)
Valerie: (yep)
GM: (You may turn it into a Dramatic Failure for a beat :D)
Valerie: (May as well get something out of it!)
GM: Unfortunately, she knows she won't find much about that from the papers, so instead she rolls her way over to the handicapped computer station and logs in.
She's at it for a while - unfortunately, it's a slog. She enters the names of each of the disappeared people, starting with Ashlyn and working backwards.
As she's working, though, her screen is abruptly taken over, the mouse moving of its own accord and resisting her attempts to control it.
It opens up a notepad, and begins to type:
D O N T G O D I G G I N G W H E R E Y O U D O N T B E L O N G
Valerie: She blanches and lets go of the mouse, rolling back a few inches from the workstation. Oh shit.
Valerie: "I just want to let someone free," she pleads quietly at the computer, feeling a bit foolish for doing so.
GM: It doesn't seem to hear her, not like Ashlyn does.
Valerie: She pokes one of the keyboard keys, testingly.
GM: She's able to type into the space below where it was
Valerie: 'I just want to free her'
Valerie: She then withdraws her hands and watches the screen.
GM: It takes control again, typing on the next line:
N O F R E E D O M F A T E S E A L E D K N O W L E D G E M U S T B E H I D D E N S T O P O R Y O U W I L L B E N E X T
Valerie: She doesn't like the idea of arguing with ... whoever that is more than she needs to, honestly, lest it loses its patience and takes her on the spot. How do you even defend a computer from that? After a bit, she just hits the log-off button and rolls away from it back to her sister.
GM: (Roll Integrity! :D)
GM: (Beat for breaking point naturally)
Valerie: (safe-uh, 1 succ)
GM: (Select an appropriate condition!)
GM: (Probably Spooked at this point)
Valerie: (yeah)
GM: (But Guilty is also acceptable)
Valerie: (will go with spooked)
GM: "Hey heart, how - holy shit."
GM: "...I can see your veins you're so pale."
Valerie: "It's.." She rubs one of her arms with a hand. "Research took a weird turn I shouldn't have taken, I think."
Valerie: She's got goosebumps still..
GM: "What do you mean?" She closes up a book, and goes to take her hand.
GM: "Is it... it's not your illness is it?"
Valerie: "No, no, I already read up all I need on that. I already have both the worse case and best case scenarios seared in my head." She leans back and looks up at her. "Someone I know is in some sort of trouble with bad folk, so I thought I'd look something up to help them, but... I think looking any deeper would get me in trouble."
'Trouble' is the understatement of a century, but talking about magic and computer kidnappings doesn't feel rational.
GM: Her features tighten with worry.
"What kind of trouble are we talking about?"
Valerie: Val hesitates. She's already said more than she probably should. After a bit, though, she murmurs. "Not here..."
GM: To her sister's credit, she doesn't complain. She gathers the books that she's checking out, packing them into her backpack, and takes the handles of the wheelchair. Within the hour, they're back at her apartment, her sister pulling her hair back into a ponytail as she settles with her.
Valerie: She feels relatively safe that they can't listen in - so long as the LED on her webcams and microphones stay off. She chews on her lip while thinking it over, then finally lets it out. "Last week, we had this stream with Ethan, finishing the PS4. During it, someone was saying weird things in chat - that they were 'stuck in the internet' and, y'know, figured it was a joke. But then they contacted me. I was rolling my eyes at it, but this is where things get weird."
She pulls the 3D printed living room and sets it down on the nearby table. She trails a finger along the top edge of it. "This thing was sent to my 3D printer. It didn't print - this is a modified version I made printable. But that's the file that got sent into it. And my printer is not Wi-Fi enabled. It's manual, USB key deal."
She wrings her hands together. "That's when the kitchen light blew up, when she got.. attacked by something on her side of things. Ethan can corroborate things this far."
"While you were sleeping last night, I got a message from her. Cause I called her with an image, to get in touch with her again. Since, I couldn't explain it, I had to know how she did what she did. And she hacked a weird server, and they hacked her computer and it.. it took her? I don't know, she doesn't know either. And it sounds completely insane and I'm wondering if I'm just not losing it, but in the library, someone took control of the computer and put a message warning me away, that I'd be next if I looked into it any more."
She starts to hyperventilate. "I can't, reconcile it, this is fucking supernatural and it shouldn't exist but I have zero evidence that would point to the contrary. It's too elaborate to be a hoax or a prank."
GM: Her sister crosses her arms, her eyes unreadable.
"This does sound crazy," she admits. "Could I talk to her?"
Valerie: She turns about and rolls to her computer. "If she's awake.." Or alive, or still there. She sees about sending a few buzz her ways.
GM: After a moment, there's a sleepy reply in return
{Wuzza?}
GM: After surviving so long, she must be primed for any sound
GM: Probably doesn't sleep well at all
Valerie: {Sandwich and water bottle on desk behind you. Uhm... got some development. Opening webcam, kay?}
GM: {Oh thank God}
{*munch munch*}
Did she send that deliberately to be cute?
{Lemme fix my hair a little - okay, shoot.}
Valerie: She goes ahead and saves some memory and software ahead of time before opening the cam invite.
GM: With her sister watching over her shoulder, the video chat slowly fuzzes into view, snowed over with static. The young Irish girl sits in Arielle's chair, the sandwich already finished and washing it down with the water bottle desperately.
"Hey... oh, you have a twin? I think I remember you mentioning that in one of your videos."
Valerie: "Yeah. This is Arielle. Ari, this is Ashlyn. ...first, proof that I'm this wasn't hallucinated." She considers, then picks up the sci-fi-Lethe figurine. This should have plenty of personal significance, given how much work she put behind it. She then lays it on a spot where it would be visible in the video shot.
GM: Arielle is quiet for a moment, watching. As she thought, there's a brief delay before it abruptly appears on the desk in the same spot, between blinks
GM: No comment from Arielle. When she looks up at her sister, her face is ashen, probably the same color hers is.
Valerie: She takes her sister's hand, squeezing it tightly. "Ash, I went to the library to look into it. With you included, I found 10 other names of computer-related disappearances. But when I started looking for details into them individually, I got a threat to warn me away."
GM: She sits up.
"Was it kinda weird?"
Valerie: "Yeah. It was all caps, a space between each letter."
GM: The girl shivers.
"That's the thing that pulled me in here."
Valerie: She bites her lip. "I wouldn't have been much use on your side, I don't think, so I had to pull away."
GM: "Probably smart."
She sighs.
"Help me, please. Anything. I miss my folks. I had a birthday pass, I'm sure they're having a funeral in my name..."
Valerie: "If I stick with ink based research, shouldn't be a problem, right..? Old fashioned way." She lays her head back, looking up at the ceiling. What else? Would help to have an expert on the matter, but if they're behind it, that's not gonna be useful. "..for now." She types her email into the IM. "I have notifications, and my computer is always on. You can always come crashing here if you need to be on the move."
GM: The girl sniffs.
"Yeah, okay. Thank you. Heh... I used to watch your show, you know? You convinced me to get into computers, and that's not a thing girls are encouraged to do in my family..."
Valerie: "I'm glad I can pay you back for your views now, with whatever I can."
Valerie: Though if one thing would scare anyone from a computer career, it's being sucked into one.
GM: Ashlyn manages not to cry, offering her a small smile.
"I'm going to try to sleep again... as much as I can anyway. Let me know if you find anything? I... I don't know if I can ask that, but please."
Valerie: "I'll try." She nods at her.
GM: The screen snows over, her computer stutters as program usage spikes, and then the call ends.
Ashen Arielle looks down at her, taking slow breaths. She crouches before her
GM: "...I believe you, Sis."
Valerie: She leans forwards to hug her. "Thank you.. I was sure I was crazy."
GM: "Just... just be careful, okay?"
GM: "You don't know what sort of thing might be listening."
Valerie: "I'll take what precautions I can, I promise."
GM: "What are you going to do?"
Valerie: "Antique store, bookstores, the library's archive. Whatever's written on ink can't be watched by a computer unless I open it next to a camera. Though I'll need to go slow, too. Attend my regular life so it looks like I moved on."
Valerie: "That... seems like a decent plan?"
Valerie: "I mostly need information, though."
GM: She squeezes her shoulder.
"I should come with you."
Valerie: "..for now, okay, cause it's you putting on that freaking-out face that's making me brave and rational. But if I'm gonna do the life thing between research bouts, you have to do the same too."
GM: "Of course I am." She snorts.
Valerie: "Just making things light." she smiles and hugs her again. "I feel we'll be barking up a lot of false leads before this is through."
GM: "I'm glad you brought me into this... I don't want to be apart from you," she murmurs.
Valerie: "You'd have found out sooner or later even if I'd lied to you about it. By empathy, if anything, then you would have snooped and it'd just be messy and a sign of mistrust and lead to miscommunications..." She shrugs. "I hate lying to you."
Valerie: "Besides." She squeezes one of her biceps. "If I'm gonna go for books, this is perfect."
GM: Her sister laughs. Her arms are quite hardened - doesn't she take a martial arts class of some sort too?
GM: "Okay."
GM: "So... tell me everything. About her."
GM: She settles down next to her.
"...also I can't really begin to say how strong you are. You're doing this even with a serious medical condition."
Valerie: "Doing this is keeping my mind off my condition. Gives me something to think about. Right, so, Ashlyn Brent, from Dublin. 5 weeks ago, in June, she disappeared. Her room was empty, but found no trace of forced entry, or that she'd run away, or of being attacked or of a struggle. Her computer was on but it locked itself. If they ever cracked the code on it, I didn't find any reports of what was on it.
"She had been bouncing European chat rooms looking for help, till she hit 4chan and meme'd her way to worldwide servers. She's been on the run since from things that make the shadows grow long and develop claws. Whatever is in the room has a strong effect on what's on her side." She puts the figurine back at the workbench as a way of pointing it out.
"Whatever's on her side has a weak effect here. The... shadow things left an after image on Ethan's computer and crashed it, and when she laid down to sleep where you were sleeping, well, it woke you up and made you feel weird."
Valerie: "Processed food is cheap, bland if not nauseating, apparently, but natural stuff seems to work well. She's got a weird distorted version of my room right now, or of wherever she is. Like that." She motions to the room 3D print. "Not sure if it being translated into a 3D model made it worse, but I could see some of it behind her."
Valerie: "That's... about all I've manage to dig up, apart from these 9 other names." She sets her phone with the notepad app down.
GM: Her sister brushes her hands through her hair, a nervous habit.
"Okay, so... I'm taking this at face value. Let's say all this is true - what can you do? How would you find out what took her without being yourself taken?"
Valerie: "That's, uh... Let's see." Her head tilts back. "Hmmm... I mean, okay, here's my thought. Say they're a threat, and someone with actual experience in this sort of thing wanted to write about them. He wouldn't go and blog about it, y'know? So, that means writing in a book, journal, something like that. Or oblique reference to them in some book."
Valerie: "That way, he's safe from them."
GM: "Okay, fair enough."
Valerie: "The tricky part is if anyone in San Fran wrote about them, or wrote about writing about them. These are computer... things, so books before NORAD won't be any help."
GM: "So you actually need to figure out what you're looking for before you go looking for it."
GM: "Would Ashlyn know anything that could help?"
Valerie: "She knows where the server she hacked is. It has to be hosted somewhere, so ... maybe the company that hosts it has something."
GM: "Okay. Maybe she found something else in the server, too?"
Valerie: "Yeah, that's a good avenue to look into. ...though I'll let her snooze a couple of hours."
GM: "She looks like she's been through the shit, to be expressive."
GM: "When you do find something, let me know before you go looking - you can't run as fast as I'd like."
Valerie: "Or run at all, for that matter, but yeah, I'll keep you updated."
GM: She squeezes her hand.
"I could stay? I have school tomorrow but I've got my bike."
Valerie: "I'll manage. You should get some rest and recharge up. I've been tired during class, it sucks." She smiles up at her.
GM: She smiles.
"I'll make dinner. We'll leave some out for your friend, too."
Valerie: "I'll accept that concession."
GM: Her clone gets up, going to do just that. Ethan's asking her how she's doing - he tends to talk to her at least once a day to see how she's doing, now that they're officially dating.
Valerie: {I'm}
She stares at the monitor for a bit. Should she rope him into it too...? It feels like the more people she tells, the more dangerous it is. But the more of her people who know, the more stick-together they are...? "You think I should fill Ethan in..?"
GM: "You said he already saw part of it, right? Then he'll ask about it eventually."
Valerie: "Yeah... Yeah, okay."
{I'm a bit overwhelmed. There's something messed up going on. Ashlyn is safe, she's crashing 'here', in a manner of speaking.}
GM: {The thing hasn't come for her again?}
Valerie: {Doesn't seem so. At least not yet. Maybe the fact there were over a thousand pair of eyes on the place made it more vulnerable. Neither of us really know how this is working for sure.}
GM: {I can't believe we're talking about it, but that's life yeah?}
Valerie: {Apparently, which is weird enough. Just as a quick summary of things so far:}
She then goes ahead and writes up things so far. Transferring food, modifying the room, the shadow things, then her research and the threat at the library.
...{then I filled sis in. So that's why I'll be looking for a paper trail, once I get some more info off Ashlyn.}
GM: As promised, her sister leaves a plate of pasta out for their little roommate.
Valerie: "Thanks, Soul." She takes her plate to start munching at her portion.
GM: That perks her right up.
A message from Ashlyn arrives {I'm still here. Thanks for the food.}
GM: "I deliberately avoided the processed sauce - oil straight from the bottle, flakes of red pepper, and grated parmesan," her sister says
GM: "...can she hear us?"
Valerie: "Uhh, can you?"
GM: {Yes. I accessed the mic.}
Valerie: "Oh, cool. Okay, so, we have the start of a plan."
GM: {Hold on - }
GM: Her voice crackles out of the speakers
GM:
"Yeah?"
Valerie: ...a bit freaky, but she rolls with it. "So, first, I'll need what information you have that was on the server, and its location. We need to know what we're up against, otherwise we'll be relying on luck, given disappearances are, sadly, a dime a dozen. Hopefully there's something useful you saw that would point us in the right direction so we can narrow things down, and start looking in antiques and bookstores and library archives where computers haven't been in a while."
GM: Arielle watches in almost as much shock, listening
GM: "Oh! So yeah. I can talk about what I found in the server."
GM: "A lot of it had to do with instances of what they referred to as 'magic'."
Valerie: "At this point I'll believe it."
GM: "So it was - like, talking about spirits, and how spirits kind of have their own realm, and they asked - well, what about technology spirits?"
GM: "Does technology have a spirit?"
Valerie: "So it was like a paper?"
GM: "Yeah, that was just one of them."
GM: "The answer to that is apparently yes, all things have spirits."
GM: "And the internet therefore must have a spiritual reflection."
Valerie: "So the.. spirit of the internet is taking people."
GM: "Or at least a spirit? Maybe."
She sighs.
"So yeah, i guess that's where I am. The 'shadow' of the internet or something."
GM: "If I could get into the other Shadow, the normal one they talk about, maybe I could find a way back?"
GM: "I don't know, every time I try to find a way out I find these spirit things."
Valerie: "Don't think it's wise to go about this blindly without understanding just where you are. Not when there's things hunting you."
GM: "And I guess there's magicians who can manipulate this sort of thing?"
GM: "I was getting kinda desperate and hungry when I asked you. It was pretty stupid."
Valerie: "Well, things seem to have calmed down. I'll avoid streaming, think that might have drawn their attention."
"But we've got something narrowed down. 'Spirits' and 'technology spirits' is a lot narrower than 'kidnapping victim'."
GM: "I guess I can stay out of your way if you have to do videos again. It seems like I'm not drawing as much attention as before, staying here?"
GM: Arielle coughs.
"What if we brought your webcams to other parts of the house? Could she visit?"
Valerie: Her head tilts. "..would the bath work in there?"
GM: "I don't know," Ashlyn says
Valerie: "No harm trying." She collects her webcams and extra long USB cables and starts to move around the place. One in her washroom, one in the kitchen, and after some deliberation decides to put the third one in the bedroom. Best to have extra places to retreat into, and it's not like Val takes a lot of place.
Then she sets up a virtual webcam that uses all three and sends that to Ashlyn. "Did that do anything?"
GM: "Sorry, I was off exploring. Yeah! It did, actually - everything is kinda distorted still, but I can see more of your house than I used to."
Valerie: "Alright, well, that might simplify feeding yourself. Try the taps, I'm curious."
GM: "Okay! I'll be right back."
GM: "The logic here is a bit crazy," Arielle says, "she has to go 'away' from the computer to see parts of things in the computer."
Valerie: "I can't even start guessing. Clearly she has 3D space around her, so maybe the computer is more of a, of a window. Same with the webcams - only difference is that the webcams don't have a messenger in them."
Valerie: "...I think."
Valerie: "I'm also intrigued by how she can interface with speakers or microphone. Like, what physical actions does that take on her part?"
GM: "Well," Ashlyn says. "I just kinda - concentrate on them, I guess?"
Valerie: "Oh, you're back. ..sounds convenient."
Valerie: "Do you have running water over there?"
GM: "I do!"
GM: "I can even fill my bottle from the sink now."
GM: "The fridge is kind of - meh. It's full of weak echoes or whatever.'
Valerie: "I'll start taking an inventory of what I've got. Hopefully that'll solidify them."
Valerie: "And I can always cook something up anyway. Alright, so, that's the plan. You can live in your version of my apartment - it's not much, but hopefully it'll stay safe - while I start looking for anything on paper I can find about technology spirits."
GM: "I even got a bed. I dunno if that thing will find me or not, but... thank you."
GM: She exhales.
GM: "Is there anything else you'd like to know? There's a lot of shit on that server."
Valerie: "It's my bed too, but I sleep on the left, so the right is yours."
"Uhm... any names you can remember?"
GM: "Not especially, but I do know the server's in the Silicon Valley area?"
"Not uncommon, that," Arielle says. "If not the Bay Area, then Iceland or somewhere else with cheap power."
Valerie: "Silicon valley's a weird place to put your magical debates, if you ask me, but I guess I'm not a magician."
GM: "Do you know where exactly?"
"The IPs belong to a company out here - uh - Pentacle Dynamics or something like that?"
Valerie: She puts that into her phone to see what results pop up.
GM: Sure enough, she gets a kind of obscure company out in the San Jose area, not even an hour away. What they do is a little obscure, but it seems like a programming/engineering outfit.
Valerie: "Looks like a software and engineering thing. It's mostly buzz words, though, the usual diatribe about bringing quality to customers without saying what the fuck they do."
GM: "They probably don't face the public," Arielle says knowledgeably.
GM: "Any real business would be with other companies or governments."
Valerie: "Yeah, that's true. But that's another filter I can use."
GM: "Just watch that you don't get sucked into the computer TRON style. No offense Ashlyn."
No response.
Valerie: "I'll stay on my toes, pardon the pun, and keep you updated."
GM: Arielle smiles sadly, squeezing her hand. "I'm going to shower and get ready for bed."
Valerie: "Okay. I'll finish the figurine and turn in soon."
GM: Her sister uses the fully reclined chair to sleep in, but she stops in to squeeze her good night before going, leaving her sister to get to sleep on her own. To think - Ashlyn might be right across from her right now
GM: Invisible, intangible
GM: or within her computer, anyway
GM: in an idea of her bed
GM: ...but Arielle felt her, didn't she?
Valerie: She did, apparently, though she has no idea what she felt persay... How on earth do people learn about this stuff? It's so bizarre. She rolls on back to the workbench to finish the painting work before going to busy herself with changing out of her clothes and into the oversized shirt that serves as her pajama.... though self-consciously, she changes in one of the blindspots of the webcams.
GM: Tricky to do when one has no useful legs, but she's used to bullshit. She saw one of her neighbors pointing a telescope into her bedroom one day, so that stopped her from changing there.
Valerie: Or to have the blinds open more than she needs to, for that matter. Soon enough, she's lugging herself under the covers, pulling her tiger in to hug it, looking at the space on the right of the bed. "G'night," she murmurs, despite being far out of range of her audio equipment.
GM: For some reason, she can imagine her hugging the same tiger, or its shadow. She can almost see her, she imagines - a shape, just out of the corner of her eye.
Valerie: A bit comforting, like when she and Ari shared a bed when they were little... Val closes her eyes to let herself drift off.
GM: It takes a while. Stupid phantom restless legs.
GM: But once she's asleep, she can forget about all of that, and be lucid again...
She's on a starship, the one from Ethan's drawings. Lethe is there, polishing a lantern, the ship's lighting making bright spots on her shiny black hair.
Valerie: "Navigator," she greets while approaching, glad to be able to walk there. Sometimes she tries to push on wheels that aren't there in dreams because of muscle memory.
GM: "Hello again, Val," she smiles shyly. She didn't know how to smile at the beginining of the show, but Tear, the demon girl, was relentless about bringing her out.
Valerie: "How are you doing?" She leans back against the wall.
GM: "Okay. I guess."
She looks back at her.
"You seem a bit different today - brighter."
Valerie: "Brighter?" she looks down at herself.
GM: She doesn't notice anything different. She's got robot legs today - this is the future after all.
Valerie: Were that she could bring those into the waking world. She'd say 'fine, die you stupid nerves' and save herself 150 grand of work, then be the belle of the robo-ball.
"Well, I dunno about that."
GM: "I can tell."
GM: She brushes her long hair back, dancing past the chair
Valerie: "Things have been weird enough lately, so being brighter might fly under the radar."
GM: "Oh, I meant it in a metaphorical way."
GM: "Like - you have more of a presence than before."
Valerie: "Oh. Might be since I've got something I'm focused on."
GM: "Maybe. What is that, if I may?"
GM: She rotates, turning to look at her.
Valerie: "Recently met someone who was kidnapped by a spirit of technology, into an alternate world. She's living in her version of my apartment currently... poor thing. I want to find a way to free her, but apparently they are watching and don't like my sniffing around. So I'll be going with the ink and paper sources they can't see," she explains. "Problem is, I have no real idea what I'm expecting to find."
GM: She puts her hands on her knees, frowning.
"That's - quite a lot of stuff."
GM: "I guess you've been busy the past week, huh?"
Valerie: "The spirit thing is relatively recent... today, in fact. ...did go on a date with Ethan last week, though, so that might be part of the brightness."
GM: "Oh!" She smiles. "I'm happy for you two. I was shipping you all the way, you know."
Valerie: "A lot of people were." Not that she's surprised her own subconscious would. "Did come with the flipside, though. I've got medical issues up to here." She taps the underside of her chin. "My legs are dissolving and my spine wants to turn off my upper body too. The latter is treatable, but the former would be irreversible. The experimental treatment - if I even get on the list - costs what I'd get for selling one of my legs, and there's no guarantee it'd even work."
Valerie: "So that's.. less bright."
Valerie: "Wish I could keep these... They're pretty rad." She taps her metal thigh. "As a backup."
GM: She looks at them, then up at her, frowning.
GM: "Valerie... I don't talk about these sorts of things with people normally, but I guess you're getting into some stuff."
Valerie: "Mh?"
GM: "What if I told you that I was real, too?"
GM: "That you're not just dreaming of me."
Valerie: Val looks at her curiously. "I'd have a hard time telling the difference between that, and me dreaming of a character pretending to not be a dream. ...but I'm dealing with weird stuff as it is, so I'd.. listen."
GM: "Well, about that - it's kind of a chicken and egg thing, if you get what I mean. When characters show up in your dreams and thoughts, those are a part of you, usually. I came from someone's thoughts originally, but after I became enough a part of the culture, I got off on my own. I know this because - well, I've been to your side."
Valerie: "So you're a dream who became real? Assuming I roll with it... so when Ethan said he talked with the characters."
GM: "He literally did. Well... with me anyway."
GM: She shifts her legs.
GM: "I don't want to get into my problems though."
GM: "Just... I've been around for a while now, I know things. I know about spirits and magic."
GM: "And you should be careful. You're mortal."
Valerie: She wanders over to sit down in front of her, taken in at least. "Can't just leave her to live forever in that place, though."
GM: "If you don't believe me, ask Ethan about - uh - his dreams about the green mushrooms. He'll know the one."
Valerie: "..okay."
Valerie: "But say I do believe you."
Valerie: "What do you propose?"
GM: She tucks her head low, hair falling across her face.
"You'll need to talk to a mage."
Valerie: "Where would I find one?"
GM: "That's the tricky part, especially as a mortal. I know where they are in Los Angeles. That's where - well, beings like me can go to be in your world for a while, because dreams are so close to the surface there."
GM: "I don't know where they are here. Ethan's dreams drew me here."
Valerie: "So I'd need to find a magician and get them to help out." She crosses her arms. "...honestly I was sort of expecting that already. I can't even begin to guess what I could do on my own besides find information."
GM: "I don't know. A lot, maybe?"
Valerie: "That's optimistic of you." She smiles. "I'll take the vote of confidence."
GM: "I'm kind of a woobie, it's what I do."
GM: She laughs, terribly self-aware.
Valerie: "So ask Ethan about the green mushrooms. ...that will change a lot, if it's true. I mean... what was the original show?"
GM: "What do you mean?"
Valerie: "The Forgotten. I mean, were you part of that writing team's dreams too, or visit them or... what."
GM: "Not back then," she says. "We were still pretty new then, we weren't really aware that we were anything but the real thing. That's pretty common. It's - well, when the show was cancelled, that was pretty traumatic for us."
Valerie: "I can't begin to imagine."
GM: "We were cut down midrun. Our world still exists out there, but - we're not like some shows."
GM: "You visit something like Family Guy, they're like sociopaths."
GM: "Because they just live in a very strange moment, forever.'
GM: "But us? Our creator - she had a plan for us. She had growth. We were real to her."
GM: "And to the millions who watched us."
Valerie: She rubs the side of her head. She can't begin to imagine what existential nightmare the Simpsons go through.
Valerie: "Wow... I did not expect shows to be visitable places."
GM: "Tear left after that. I never saw her again. She was always the one who was eager to explore new vistas. I think she found some kid who identified with her, but after that, I don't know. Marcus disappeared. Caelia went looking for him, because of course."
GM: "And I... I tried to find someone else. I couldn't find my creator, so I've been trying to find someone who really, really cares about us, who can - I don't know, write us a new story?"
GM: "Maybe that'll bring us back?"
GM: "Stupid copyright laws won't let me just - "
GM: She curls up on her chair
Valerie: She reaches out to put a hand on her shoulder. "Sorry... That sounds horrifying."
GM: She looks up at her, sad, and takes her hand.
GM: "I'm sorry, I went and unloaded on you anyway."
GM: "...I just want my friends back. I want to grow up."
Valerie: She smiles. "I'll work with Ethan, to get you a story up. Hopefully, it'll bring something to light."
GM: "I hope so," she squeezes her hand.
"Maybe I can help you with your friend? I can come into the world, I just can't be physical in it."
GM: "You won't see or hear me if I do."
GM: "...and to be fair she might not either, if we're not in phase."
GM: "But I'm good at guiding people."
GM: "It's an actual power that I actually have."
Valerie: "I'll take whatever help I can get, so long as you're not putting yourself in danger."
GM: "I'll be careful," she smiles, and rises to embrace her
GM: "I'm glad I talked to you."
GM: "You're not like those jerks down in Pasadena, who tried to lock me in a contract like they did Caelia."
Valerie: She hugs her. "I leave my contracts for commissions and sponsors, and usually just to clarify an exchange of services rendered for monies. No use milking."
GM: "I'll come back with you when you wake up this time. You'll hear me as long as I'm, uhm - I don't know the word for it, but being connected to you basically."
Valerie: "Okay. ...uhm, don't tell Ethan about the figurine of you you'll see there. It's a surprise."
GM: She giggles, delighted. "Really? That's so sweet! I love fanart - well, uh."
GM: She blushes
GM: "Most of it!"
GM: "The really naughty stuff doesn't have a huge impact on me because it isn't canon but you know..."
Valerie: She snickers. "I wish I could say I couldn't relate... but I actually can."
Valerie: "It comes with having a fanbase of any size."
GM: She looks at her, considering.
"You and Ethan both? You know - there might actually be a version of you out there."
GM: "The version of you that's formed by your fans' impressions of you two."
Valerie: "That sounds like it'd be really confusing..."
Valerie: "Cool, but confusing."
GM: "It can be!"
GM: She looks out at the stars.
GM: "You know, some of the older - beings, I guess - talk about the potential to move beyond our state."
GM: "Like... if enough people truly believed in us, we could be more than just ideas, even thoughtful ideas."
GM: "Like the old gods."
GM: "But I guess that doesn't happen, or else we'd see it, right?"
GM: She squeezes her hand. "I think you're waking up now. Thanks for listening."
GM: "You're way more lucid than Ethan is."
Valerie: "It's the one bonus that came with crippling depression. ...I'm better now, though." She looks out at the stars even as they start to slow down before twinkling out to bathe the area in darkness. "For what it's worth, I think you're already more than an idea," she adds before her mind can float up to the surface.
GM: And with that, she floats awake.
GM: Her legs dead weight below her
Valerie: Not even made of metal. She blinks a few times and slowly sits up, blearily rubbing at her eyes.
GM: With the sun streaming in, she wonders if indeed it was all just a weird dream, something fevered by her encounters with Ashlyn
GM: Maybe that was all a joke, too
GM: Testing?
GM: Hello?
Valerie: She jumps with a gasp and clings her bedsheets.
GM: Hey! Yes it worked.
Valerie: "Y.. yeah. Holy fuck..."
GM: This is my first time trying it.
Valerie: She paws around for her wheelchair's handle, tugging it in closer. "...Ethan will flip." She sets the brakes, then slides herself back into it. Val then wheels on out of her room.
GM: So where would I find this girl if she was around?
Valerie: "Somewhere in the apartment. I can ping her and check." She comes on out to the living room, checking to see if Arielle is still there or if she went to class.
GM: Arielle has, in fact, gone to class. She must have slipped out while she was passed out.
{Hey, I'm still here.}
GM: An image flickers up, a snapshot
GM: she's washed and brushed her hair, which now bounces about her shoulders, shiny and red
GM: And the circles in her eyes have faded somewhat.
Valerie: "Okay, so, new development. I might have found a bit of help."
GM: {Yeah???} she asks, hope spilling through
Valerie: "It's kind of complicated, but I shared a dream with a real magickey type. More than once, and I didn't know. Apparently she's good at guiding, so hoping it'll help us come up with a plan."
Valerie: "So, at the moment you're right where I am, right?"
Valerie: She sends a webcam snapshot of her own.
GM: {Yeah, that's right. Let me scootch over...}
GM: Oh hey! One moment -
GM: There's another snapshot, and quite suddenly, Lethe and a screaming Ashlyn appear before her.
{AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! OH MARY MOTHER OF GOD!}
Lethe {Eep! Please don't be scared!}
GM: {I'm not scary, I promise, my river-of-death days are over!}
Valerie: Val puts her hands up to her mouth to stop herself from laughing.
It doesn't work.
GM: The two are now in a chat room with her
Valerie: Once Valerie's calmed herself down, she swallows some air. "Okay... Lethe, Ashlyn. Ashlyn, Lethe."
GM: Talking back and forth rapidly at first, they at least settle out that she isn't there to kill Ashlyn
GM: Ash {I'm - I'm okay.}
GM: {Little freaked out is all.}
Valerie: "Didn't think she'd just pop up like that, sorry."
GM: {...There is an honest-to-god cartoon character here.}
Valerie: "Yeah, like I said, long story, but essentially, she's the idea made manifest. What's on screen for us is like... a window to their version of their world, and they live the stories."
Valerie: "I think?"
Valerie: "That's what I got from the explanation."
GM: Lethe {Kinda.}
GM: {It's a bit like - what you see on the screen influences what we become. It's sort of a collective unconscious thing. And when we change, it propagates back to you.}
Valerie: "Oh, oh...! Send a snapshot, please."
GM: They oblige, a picture appearing in the chat. They're squished up together to get access to the keyboard or whatever.
GM: Or in range for thoughts?
GM: Lethe {This is so strange. Normally beings like me can't manifest like this on your world.}
Valerie: She... will have to ask the magician that, if she can find one. For now, though, she saves the picture, then goes to Ethan's IM. {Okay, so, things got weird-er overnight. Lemme know when you get this.}
Valerie: "So there's something about the place Ash is stuck in that's allowing it?"
GM: {WTF!!!} Ethan responds expressively.
Lethe {Yeah - how do I describe it - it's in phase with me, I guess? Like, ghosts aren't in phase with me, and neither are spirits.}
GM: {And those two aren't in phase with each other either, usually.}
Valerie: {Also, proof I'm not joshing you: 'green mushroom dream'}
GM: Ethan {......}
GM: {If that's really Lethe she better not tell you the rest of that dream.}
Valerie: {Should I be jealous?}
GM: {Oh god, my fucking mind is blown!}
GM: {No! No, I swear.}
GM: Val has an idea of what that feels like
GM: It's almost like - she's on the verge of something
Valerie: She drums her fingers on her lower lip with one hand while typing with the other. {But yeah, you've been talking to her, and she to me. She 'followed' me awake, to help Ash out.}
Valerie: "So, you're not a ghost, you're not a spirit... so whatever you are, Ashlyn is currently made of the same stuff, I guess?"
GM: {Apparently!}
Valerie: "Whew, okay. That's headachy. Lemme get some toasts going for you two and myself while I digest this."
GM: {I don't eat, but thanks. I'll have a nibble.}
Valerie: "Strawberry jam or peanut butter?"
GM: Ashlyn {I'll have peanut butter.}
Lethe {Strawberry~}
Ethan {I should come over. I can skip class.}
Valerie: {Okay. Peanut butter or strawberry jam?}
Valerie: {While I'm making breakfast for everyone.}
GM: {Por que no mas dos?}
Valerie: {I never get PB&J, but I can make you one of each.}
"Ethan's on his way." She's about to hide the figurine, but given he'll get to talk to her in person while awake... her little figurine seems kind of paltry in comparison. So instead she sets it by the computer before rolling to the kitchen to get breakfast going.
GM: When she gets back, she finds they've gotten the video calling feature working again. Lethe is playing with the little figurine, cooing over it in admiration.
GM: Ashlyn has flopped over in Arielle's chair
Valerie: She sets the plates out for her other worldly guests. She keeps the ones for Ethan below the warm lamp of the oven so they don't dry out, and chews on her on thoughtfully.
GM: They take some time to eat and talk quietly. Ashlyn seems hungry for someone to talk to, asking about what's going on in the world.
Eventually, she hears an electric engine outside on the pavement - that sounds like Ethan's scooter.
Valerie: Val answers as best she can. She's not the biggest politics or news head, but some are just hard to miss. When the scooter makes itself known, she reaches for the door's remote and waits for the sound of footsteps before she gets it to open for him.
GM: Ethan hops up, bending down to give her a hug and smile.
"Hey~"
Valerie: She leans up to hug him, then motions over at the screen. "Tada."
GM: He joins her, and comes to stare at the two
GM: "...hi Ethan!" Lethe tucks the figuring behind her, her long hair sweeping
Valerie: "Ethan, Ashlyn, Ashlyn, Ethan."
GM: "Nice to meet you outside dreams!"
GM: Ashlyn waves from the chair
Valerie: "And you know Lethe."
GM: He waves back awkwardly
GM: "...mind blowing even more."
Valerie: "Wasn't exactly smooth sailing for me when she announced her real-ness to me while I was sleeping."
GM: "I'm not even sure where to go with this. What about aliens? Bigfoot? Gods?"
Lethe quirks a smile. "I don't know, Ethan. I'm just a concept, an idea enough people have formed that I have my own existence now."
GM: "That's - okay, that's all sorts of questions I can't even begin to ask right now."
GM: He settles into the seat.
GM: "What happens now?"
GM: Ashlyn perks up, from the same spot, relatively speaking
GM: "I'd like to know that, too."
Valerie: "So, we apparently need a magician to extract Ash. Issue is finding one. Though Lethe apparently has some mojo she can pull off of her own."
GM: "I can guide her," Lethe says, "so long as I have an idea of where to go, roughly."
GM: "Can't I just go out the same way you came in?" Ashlyn asks.
GM: "...I don't know. You're flesh and blood. I don't think passing through a solid screen would work very well for you."
Valerie: "Yeah... Plus, she wasn't really tangible until she manifested where you are. Not sure that'd be any better of an existence. Okay, so what we need is to find out a place where you need to take her. Presumably that's where there's a way out."
GM: "Even if you did, you'd still be in Twilight."
GM: She nods.
GM: Ethan leans forward
GM: "Well - that program you downloaded."
GM: (presuming he was updated!)
Valerie: She'll have filled him in, yeah!
GM: "It did allow you to get translated one from the other, right?"
GM: "...dunno if that's the best solution," Ashlyn murmurs
Valerie: "It's pretty dangerous. Especially bringing 'it' to a computer could spell trouble. Not without understanding it."
GM: "Are we ever going to understand it?" Ethan asks
GM: "Or find a mage, for that matter?"
GM: "I think - I think we have to do this on our own."
Valerie: She taps her fingers together. ".. I'd like to see if I can find any scrap of relevant information first, before we dive into anything. It only costs time, which we seem to have managed to buy some of."
GM: "So long as that thing don' come along," Ashlyn mutters, her Dubliner brogue particularly thick.
"If it does, I'll protect you," Lethe says. "Unless it's stronger than I am!"
GM: "In which case, I guess we're both running."
Valerie: "Let's hope that doesn't happen. Wish there was something I could do to, uh... 'thing'-proof my place."
GM: "You could try looking up a ritual! I don't know if any of them work, though. I don't really know much about magic, I tend to avoid them."
GM: "But I'm pretty tough - I'm a childhood idol after all."
Valerie: "I'll see what I can dig up while I'm out there. ..for now I should put some clothes on. Excuse me."
GM: "I'll keep them company for ya."
GM: Ethan smiles.
GM: "Though you're adorable in your jammies."
Valerie: "Righto." She wheels on out to her bedroom. "Dunno if I'd call a giant t-shirt adorable, but thanks, you sweet talker you." She still smiles as she disappears in her room to start the process of changing.
GM: Ashlyn is pretty star struck when she gets back, asking Ethan about his videos. She's seen girls at VidCon freak out at the sight of him, and he's really not much bigger of a youtuber than she is.
Valerie: He's more at ease in front of a camera, and video games is less niche than electronics. Also he's cute... good combination, she imagines.
GM: While she is, quoting a youtube comment, 'So cute I just want to devour her'
Valerie: It's a bit of a stranger way to put it. Maybe if she had Ari's figure... "Alright, I'm presentable."
GM: "Great! So - let's try to think of a place to start."
GM: It's funny how this has kind of taken over her life, but she can't really let it go.
Valerie: She'd have to be a cold-hearted bitch to turn off her computer and wait for them to be gone just so she could ignore them.
Besides, she'd much rather be doing something that matters instead of dwelling on her busted up spinal cord and withering legs. "I made a list of bookstores we can hit with some bus hopping. There's the public library's archive, and we can check pawn shops as a last resort. They have old books too."
GM: "It's a shame I can't fit your wheelchair on my scooter - okay, I realize that sounded really bad. I like the thought of us riding together, though."
GM: He takes her hand, squeezing it
Valerie: "One of these days, maybe." She squeezes it back.
GM: "Let's do a search, see if we can't narrow things?"
Valerie: "Yeah, worth a try." She rolls up to her computer to google up. What to search, though... 'technology spirits books bookstore where:san francisco'
GM: "..." Ethan looks suddenly thoughtful
GM: "This just occurred to me... don't we have, like, the perfect search engine right here?"
Valerie: "My main worry is that for every moment we spend searching using a computer, is one where we might get noticed."
GM: "No no."
GM: He glances at the screen, where the video is still live to - well, the internet room that is her room
Valerie: She follows his gaze, then tilts her head. "... that's the internet, ain't it."
GM: Ashlyn turns her head.
"...who me?" Lethe asks, eyes wide.
Valerie: "Well, you can guide, so if we describe a concept well enough, could you... find a place 'online' that has it?"
GM: "...yeah, I probably could."
Valerie: "How stealthy can you make yourself?"
GM: "Almost invisible."
GM: "Hard to notice, more accurately."
Valerie: "Still better, cause this doesn't have insignificant risk. ...though you're also the most qualified to deal with something going wrong."
GM: She smiles. "You're my friends now - I can do it. It'll be like old times."
Valerie: "So, what should we focus on with that in mind? Intel on the curse and spirits, or should we go straight for finding ourselves a mage we can plead our case to?"
GM: "I'm still convinced we need to figure this out," Ethan says, "but I guess I defer to the girl who knows better."
Lethe frowns.
"The problem with going for a magician - I can't really guarantee they'll be a nice or helpful one. They might even be dangerous."
Valerie: "Yeah, that's a problem. Okay, then... Let's go with information and see how far we can go at it on our own. We need genuine articles about tech spirits and their world. Or if there's none online, some book that might be available in San Francisco we can go pick up or skim in store."
GM: "Okay! I can manage that."
She lifts her lantern from out of sight - quite possibly, never existing at all.
Ethan blinks, looking to the desk at the Sci-fi version of her.
"...oh my gosh, is that for me?"
Valerie: "Oh! Right, yeah. Sorry, it got a bit overshadowed by the real deal existing." She blushes, but collects it to present it to him. "But yeah, I figure it could be useful, or just a fun addition."
GM: He accepts it, looking it over with deep admiration. Then he brushes her lips with his.
Valerie: Her cheeks go beet red, but feeling emboldened, she leans over a bit to turn it into a soft, if short, peck.
GM: Lethe squeals, giggling
GM: "Oh my god! It's a dream come true."
Valerie: She squeaks and looks over at the screen. "Augh, what? Didn't you leave?"
GM: "I saw you two and I was like - I gotta see this!"
GM: She covers her mouth, giggling madly
GM: Ashlyn grins. "It was pretty adorable."
Valerie: She smiles lamely, glancing up at Ethan. "Was it?"
GM: He's blushing fiercely, his fine dark skin darkened
GM: "Yeah, yeah it was."
Valerie: "Well, good." She adjust her jeans, which don't need adjustment.
GM: "Okay! Going now!" Lethe's lantern glimmers in the other world, and she sets off, the light reflecting in her eyes.
Valerie: "She's an interesting one, for someone who didn't know how to smile."
GM: "That was the entire thrust of the first arc for her after all - I'm going to nerd out if this continues."
Valerie: "You'll have more opportunities to go in great detail about her past and future story arcs if we can get your project on its feet."
GM: "...that's just one of many questions that this opens up."
Valerie: "A couple weeks ago I was certain none of this stuff existed. Now I'm guesting someone in another version of my home and a world famous idea of a character come to life has come to help while we search for answers to magical questions.
"So yeah, many questions is right."
GM: "Wonder how long she'll take?" He considers.
"Why don't we watch a show or something? That should give her plenty of time."
Valerie: "Sure, got something in mind?"
GM: "Watching an episode of the Forgotten would be pretty hilarious, but how about a new series?"
He looks to the chair. "We could even sit together, if you'd like?"
Valerie: "Let's go with something new. ...and okay." She pops up Netflix and gathers her remote. "Can you see the screen where you are, Ash?"
GM: "Yup."
GM: She smiles, settling down with another apple.
Valerie: "Wicked." She rolls on over to the longchair. Brakes on, then she pulls herself up and over. At this rate she's going to need to get a couch.
GM: He helps her out, his hands warm against hers as he settles her in on the big comfy chair beside him. They're both thin, but it's still pretty cozy
GM: The first time she's ever settled in alongside a boy.
Valerie: She lets herself get settled and comfortable with a smile. This is nice... she could get used to that. She starts to flip through until someone says 'ooh' and she hits play on that.
GM: ---------------------
GM: Despite their anxiety, nothing comes to attack Ashlyn in the next hour, and she seems to be recovering now that she's interacting with real people, eating, and resting. There's still that edge of fear about her - doubt about her safety, which, really, is a healthy reaction under the present circumstances.
Their newest friend isn't even human. She's a creation of the mind, one who blew her mind with her revelations. Yet each moment seems to only open up new vistas for her, despite the pain of it - and the terror, too.
It's like the world could open up below her and swallow her and everyone she knows up without a trace, like a sinkhole.
Valerie: It's bizarre, certainly, and worrying. She would not be able to outrun those shadow things in a wheelchair, especially having to navigate terrain that would be strange and distorted, after all.
But that it's so different and weird is helping her look at her medical issues with less anxiety, if only cause the scope is so different.
And weird, that can't be understated.
GM: "I've found some stuff!" Lethe says, excited, with folders tucked up under her arm. They have a weird, pixelated look about them.
Valerie: "Really? Sweet! Lemme set something up for you." She gives away her comfy position against Ethan's side to slip up to her chair and roll over. She then opens Word and Image Viewer, setting them side by side.
GM: "Now how do I..."
She pushes them into the computer and the feed lags and crashes, but a moment later she gets a couple new folders on her desktop
Valerie: "Yieesh... it didn't like that." She rubs the top of her tower. Poor thing. She waits a bit to make sure there's nothing else that will lag her computer up, then re-opens the cam call.
Valerie: That it didn't turn itself off in protest is impressive.
GM: Maybe she needs a heavy-duty server tower if she's going to be interfacing with the weird spirit-internet
Valerie: She's already got enough money problems as it is, buying 10k of hardware would severely cut into it. "Let's see what you brought, then." She pops open the folders to start going through.
GM: Ethan hops up to come look while she peers through them.
"You may want to have those in a sandbox or something."
GM: "Just in case."
Valerie: "Good point. Uhm... right." She opens VMWare, which she uses for old games, and drags the folders out into it once the virtual windows boots up.
GM: "It might prove to be an overabundance of caution, but just in case."
There's quite a few files, mostly Excel. It looks - fairly criminal actually. Records of shipments, underground betting rings. Blood packs?
Most interesting, though, they appear to have files on tech spirits, and how to summon or appease them with rituals.
GM: "Some sort of... supernatural criminal outfit?"
Valerie: "That's what it looks like. Some of it's flying over my head, but this is magic mob shit for sure."
Valerie: She sorts the rituals aside, going through them in curiosity. What's a magic spell like?
Valerie: She's not sure what to expect - the movies kind of spoil people with it.
GM: It seems to be a sort of - sympathy thing. You bring together parts that speak to the nature of the spirit in question and trying to create the conditions to draw them in.
Valerie: That seems oddly simple. She has to imagine there's untold amount of depths to it and how it can go wrong. She sets those aside and instead starts to dig into the more informative files. Particularly, how it relates to computerized kidnappings.
GM: There are, in fact, several she didn't see before - three in the Silicon Valley area, all clustered around San Jose.
Valerie: "More disappearances, right around where the Pentacle Dynamics server is."
GM: "Mmph. Yeah."
GM: "Tech capital of the world, I'm not surprised."
GM: Ethan sits next to her
GM: "Thoughts?"
Valerie: "The spirit didn't want knowledge to go out. So, my guess is, they're using it like an enforcer. It keeps an eye out, and people who find out too much - I'm going to say employees who stumbled on the server since they started around the San Jose area they're stashed in. Then people who investigates those, or people like Ash who hacked them."
Valerie: "Drags them back, where they're prey to ..whatever is in there."
GM: Ashlyn sits crosslegged on her version of the chair.
GM: "Well, challenging it on its home turf seems suicidal for us," she comments
Valerie: "Yeah, no, not without a gun we know works wonders."
Valerie: "A digital one, in this case."
GM: "Anything on there about getting home?"
"Not that I saw," Ethan says. "Maybe if we could talk to an actual tech spirit..."
Valerie: "Yeah, if we summon one on an isolated machine with one of those rituals.."
GM: "If you do, you'll need to be prepared to offer something," Lethe says.
Valerie: She goes through the files. What do tech spirits like?
GM: It seems they like two things - either tech items that are somehow "charged" with a sort of spiritual energy, or services that will generate this energy or improve their position.
Valerie: "How do you charge tech stuff with spirit juice?" she wonders, mainly towards Lethe.
GM: "Essence," she says knowledgeably. "This I actually know about, because it's relevant to my existence."
GM: "At least when I'm on earth."
Valerie: "Essence?"
GM: "Yeah, like... when I'm back in my worlds, I don't need to worry about it. It's constantly flowing there. Down here though, I need to recharge if I stay too long, and that means staying near things that are resonant to my nature, such as someone watching my show, or a convention, or other things that sort of help them remember me."
GM: "But you don't just need a resonant area, you need something pre-charged, like a piece of a spirit, or something like a locus - that's a place where the barriers between worlds are thin."
GM: "Stuff around loci gets charged up."
GM: She nods to the computer. "There might be something there you can look into."
Valerie: "Locus and essence, huh?" Ctrl+F to the rescue. Locus/loci, essence, charging maybe... It's good to have an idea of what she's supposed to be looking for, at least. Slowly narrowing things down.
GM: Yeah, there's some hits here! There's address locations, too - there's even one noted here in San Francisco, down by the waterfront beside a Chinese restaurant.
Valerie: "So if we go to that place with, say, a servo actuated mechanism, like, say, the PS4-top, since that's got significant value and has tons of electronics and energy... We do the ritual and use it to trade for an exit."
Valerie: "That sounds almost sensible."
GM: "The PS4-top?" Ethan says mournfully. "So soon, you are sacrified."
Valerie: "I have a better project I'm thinking about, anyway - the XPS-One-Four."
GM: He laughs. "Fair enough. Would that work, Lethe?"
"If you can guide the tech essence of the locus into it, certainly!" she says.
Valerie: "Well, therein lies the rub... Let's see..." She starts to scroll around the locus information for, uh... transferring its errant energy into an object.
GM: She might have to improvised.
"Maybe we could get a whole bunch of conducting wire?" Ethan suggests. "String it up around the area."
Valerie: "Mh, yeah. Like an oversized remote-charge circuit. Lethe, would you be able to tell if it's working if you're there?"
GM: "Mmmaybe? I'm not tech-related. I might be able to give a useful opinion though."
Valerie: "Okay... well, we'll load up a backpack full of stuff and experiment."
GM: "We could hop into your laptop?" Ashlyn suggests. "It won't support video, but we can tag along and give a opinion."
Valerie: "That or skype cam through a cellphone. Laptop might be more secure, though."
GM: "Great! C'mon Lethe. I'm an expert at this by now."
The feed ends, and they pop up a picture on her laptop on the desk nearby
♥
Valerie: She takes her cellphone and texts Ari. She did promise she'd tell her when she was going to try something.
GM: {I'll be by with my SUV,} she promises.
GM: "This is exciting," Ethan opines as he starts packing up.
Valerie: {You're the best.} From there, Val starts to gather up what she figures they could use. USB cables, a big round of copper wiring, some charging circuits, soldering iron, solder, and of course, the PS4-top. "I'm really nervous," she admits. "But yeah... it's cool to be doing something that feels, feels... significant. We're saving someone's life, that's crazy."
GM: He grins and shoulders the round of copper cable. By the time they're ready, Arielle lets herself in. Her twin looks around, hand against the doorframe.
GM: "Hey mirror," she chirps, "and handsome."
GM: "...what was that?" Ethan asks. "Do you have a twin tongue?"
Valerie: "We've been sub-vocalizing since we could talk. It's easy to miss!" She chirrups herself to show her gladness. "It really gets a lot more information across. Makes it hard to lie to one another, too."
GM: He laughs. "Oh my god, that's so cute."
GM: Arielle pops her joints, coming in. "Here, let me take those - " she relieves him of the heavy copper wiring and the entire box without much effort.
GM: Hard muscles under smooth skin
GM: "I'm badass, you're cute~"
Valerie: "Yeah, you are. She can lift me and my chair like I weigh nothing, it's really something."
"Hahem, so, to fill you in..." She then goes ahead and lays out the plan and what they learned thanks to Lethe - also Lethe is real, show concepts are real, they just live in another world.
Tech Spirit took Ashlyn, so stands to reason tech spirit has a way out. Find that locus, a place spirits feed on essence, charge the PS4-top, summon a spirit using the ritual outlined in that document, trade for an exit for Ash.
GM: Arielle doesn't seem as badly affected by these relevations as they were, her face smooth as she takes it in. Not that she isn't surprised, but she rolls with the punches.
She brushes a free hand through her sister's shorter hair, smiling.
"You're amazing, my soul~"
Valerie: "Thanks, my heart." She lays her head on her sister's side. "Glad I'm getting some cred out of this cause my heart is trying to break out of my ribcage."
GM: She nods, looking to Ethan.
"If things get hairy, I want you to get her out of there."
GM: "...I mean, I think we'll be okay, but sure," Ethan says.
Valerie: "You're making it sound like you'd try to buy us time to run."
GM: "I can handle myself, I just want you two to be okay."
GM: She carries the tools out, and Ethan takes her wheelchair.
Valerie: "Well, I want you to be okay, so... we all get out of hairy situations." She pokes her side while they make their way out.
GM: She smiles down at her, and loads up the back. Then she pushes back one of the middle seats and lifts her sister, seat and all.
GM: Slotting her in where it was
Valerie: She's used to that, so she sets her wheels into the modded seat slot and clamps it into place securely before buckling up.
GM: Ethan climbs into the seat next to her.
"So if Lethe is real, does that mean, like - Princess Celestia, Darth Vader, and Jesus are all real too?"
Valerie: "If Peter Griffin has the right to exist, they better damn well exist."
GM: Arielle laughs and starts up the car.
Valerie: "But apparently, yeah, culture gives birth to them. There might even be another Valerie Beaudry out there. Or well, a Wire Nest."
GM: Her hands tighten on the wheel, the knuckles standing out.
"As long as she doesn't come try to replace you," she says.
Valerie: "You'd be able to tell right away. I wear a mask when I do videos."
Valerie: "That'd be her regular face."
GM: "That'd be kinda creepy," Ethan says. "...wait, would mine be like my cartoon avatar?"
GM: "Lethe seemed pretty real-ish, but her art style was pretty real."
Valerie: She snickers. "If so, then it'd be easy to tell you apart. One foot tall midget with a head as big as his body, or you."
GM: He laughs, while they descend down the hills, heading up towards the bay. San Francisco is a large peninsula, bordered on the west by the Pacific Ocean and the east by the Bay. The Golden Gate Bridge crosses the narrowest point of the bay, and they can see it to the left as they head towards the Bay Bridge that goes to Oakland. Turning off the main roads, they drive along the wharf front - miles and miles of docks and berths - to find a somewhat seedy neighborhood, a memory of when San Francisco was one of the dirtiest, most crime-ridden cities in the state. There are still some neighborhoods where it can be worth your life to roam.
GM: They manage to find a parking meter, and Arielle slides a card through it.
GM: "Hooray for the modern world."
Valerie: It's a pretty wondrous looking place - the ingenuity to make it all run as it does is something else. Too bad it's got a big stain underneath it... which apparently rests ontop of entirely different world that has its own stain underneath it.
"I'm almost surprised it works like that. I swear I still see coin-ops downtown." She unbuckles herself and unclips her wheels, then waits for Ari to ease her chair free from the SUV. She sets the PS4 on her lap and sets the running laptop with it, lifting the screen to type a quick. {Almost there.} to the chat room.
GM: "They're replacing them bit bit bit," she says, coming over to lift her out. While Ethan gets the tools out, she ties her long hair back and pins it behind her head.
Valerie: Once free, she waits for everything to be gathered up before double checking the addresses to find where the locus apparently was. "Lessee.."
GM: There's a warehouse, that's not it. There's the Chinese restaurant! It's a two-story place across the street from the water, and next to it appears to be a grocer. The locus is somewere in that area - there's an alley between them.
Valerie: "It's either the grocery store, which would make setting anything up kind of awkward, or behind it down there." She leans down to peer down the alleyway.
Valerie: She opens the laptop to keep track of anything Lethe might have to offer.
GM: There's a nest of fire escapes back there, going up several stories.
There's been a few occasions in her life where she's been to a place that felt - different.
GM: Wrong in a way
Valerie: "..I think this is it. It feels weird, doesn't it?"
GM: The lighting flickers, especially back towards the end, where a lone door lurks under the shadow of an awning
GM: Clouds have gathered from the Pacific, advancing in a grey wall towards the city.
GM: "It does," Ethan agrees, pushing his coil up a bit further
GM: {Yeah, definitely something here,} Lethe observes.
Valerie: Val takes a breath to steel herself, then rolls forwards. Time to see what she can do.
GM: The three of them, plus their unseen friends, make their way down. The Chinese restaurant and the grocer have doors that let out here, but both of them are sealed and boarded shut
GM: There's a garage door near the end, heavily rusted, and the ground here is slick and cracked.
Valerie: "This is weiiird," she murmurs.
Valerie: She's careful of where she rolls. She doesn't need to faceplant in front of everyone, now of all times.
GM: Arielle listens at the door for a moment.
"Well - I don't hear anyone."
She rattles the lock.
"Hey sis - you know how to pick locks, don't you?"
Valerie: "Not professionally, but I've stuck pins in my fair share of padlocks."
Valerie: She goes through the tools they brought for something usable. Plenty of long stick, thin rods and unfolded paperclips (because pin-hole buttons are still a thing in 2016.)
GM: (Improvised at -1!)
GM: (Dex + Larceny)
Valerie: (One success~)
GM: There's a satisfying click and she feels it turn.
GM: Arielle takes over, pushing it open and scanning the place warily.
Valerie: "Tada~." She unbraces her wheels and rolls back. Then she ducks her head to look past her sister.
GM: It's -
"An abattoir," Ethan says. "Like - this used to be a butcher's shop. Or at least a slaughterhouse."
Sure enough, there's long racks, now empty, and hooks hanging above.
"Over there," her sister says, pointing to a corner. Police tape marks off a dark, stained area. Not that the rest of the place is terribly clean - when it was operating, this place couldn't have possibly earned a clean bill of health.
GM: "Our spiritual nexis is a murder scene. Is that going to be problematic?"
Valerie: {We have a white outline of a body.}
GM: Lethe
{:<}
{Once it's reconfigured, essence is 'pure', but that means the essence around you right now is murder-aspected. There could be a murder spirit around right now.}
GM: Ashlyn {That sounds like literally the worst kind of spirit.}
GM: {There's worse, but it's not great!}
Valerie: At least the floor is nice and even for her wheelchair to roll with, though this is pretty creepy in general. {Sounds like a hoot.} She pulls up the document for the ritual of keeping spirits the fuck away.
Valerie: She also translates Lethe's explanation out loud for the others.
GM: They're going to need to make things unpleasant for the targeted kind of spirit, essentially.
