She looks amused about Lame Argentee's hinting, though that a world terrorist ended up involved makes her face fall - albeit relieved that she wasn't hurt or worse. After this, she closes her eyes, thinking things over rather than emoting through it like her motherly instinct would have her do.
Then she stands up and heads around the table and gives her daughter a hug. "So, top secret project engineering 101: First, keep things secret from anyone you don't fully trust 100%. Let them guess at what you can do, but don't let them confirm it. It buys you time, because it's a costly mistake if they're wrong and have made a move.
"Second, make yourself invaluable to the process. Or at least, make it seem that way, if it's ever discovered. They may threaten, they might take hostages, but so long as you are required to make things work even after you've made it, you have a bargaining chip they can't take away from you, and that means they can't push you too far. Not until they've reverse engineered it, and your job is to make that hard."
"Third, that's something I picked up from your father, make sure anything you make or do can't get away from you. Deadman's switch, backdoors, hidden protocols, that sort of thing."
She squeezes her, then releases her. "Last but most important, Sam... keep a cool head." Layla smiles down at her.
